Check engine light 1988 22rec

I thought I would post here before using my ODB1 code reader. So I have an 88 4 runner with a new engine. I am at the 800 mi. mark on the new motor at about 500 mi. my check engine light started coming on after 15 to 30 min. of driving. I can shut the key off and turn it back on and the light clears....So my code reader manual says as soon as I turn the key on the check engine light should illuminate but it doesnt, it only lights up after the truck has been running for awhile. Anyone have any experience with this? any thoughts on what the chek engine light might be for?

Pull the stored code(s) and see what they are telling you:

did you pay money for it?

This is my OBD-1 code reader...

And I may be wrong, but the Check Engine light is directly incorporated with the ignition system...No C/E light, no ignition. That's why it comes on when you turn the key in the on position.

Check the under hood fuse connections. I had a similar problem...

But yours sounds like a fuel or air leak.

Well the manual tells me if it doesnt light up when the key is turned on I need to repair that "circuit" and then go from there. I was hoping someone has encountered the same isssue.

I dont understand this....The check engine light does not come on at the "on" position..it only comes on after the runner has run for awhile, but the manual says it should come on the second the key is moved to the on position.
