started on my SAS on saturday. worked for about 5 hours and then got another 5 hours in on sunday. all in all i feel like i got alot of work done for about 10 hours of wrenching. id say grinding took most of my time, and cutting the frame tubes was the most time spent on any single item. i thought i could use my plasma to cut the holes, but there is some sort of webbing inside the frame at the area for the tubes and i ended up having to borrow a friends torch to burn it through. i am using Sky 3F spring packs. goals here are simple, still keep my truck looking clean and good, keep it as low as possible. but gain the offroad abilities to stop destroying my IFS when i hit the trails.

Love this build. I have been picking through it for tips and tricks on keeping my old guy looking and running good, for example never heard of SEM products before, but now will know just where to go to touch up some faded parts.

thanks. I’m not as active here anymore, mainly because my truck is where I want it. I did end up doing a few more things. I did my rear suspension with Sky springs (57”) and 6” shackles. I also have a 4x4labs rear bumper in the works. The 36” tires I had were too big so I swapped to a Q78. I reheated the transfer case with a 4.7 set from marlin and added a budbuilt skid/xmember. I mainly mess with my 40 series these days and my thread for it is on mud, which is why I’m not as active here lately.

welp, its been a million years since i started this project. hopefully it comes to an end this coming week. after all of my work i realized i had left out the temp probe that goes inside the evap box, system will not run without it. so i pushed it due to moving and other projects. well last week i pulled the box and installed the sensor. drove her to the local auto AC wiz and had them vac the system and charge it. ironically i run an HVAC business lol, it was just easier to have them charge it up for me. anywho, they called me back and said they my dryer was in backwards and my metering device was shot..hard to believe becuase its a brand new expansion valve from denso but hes the GOAT of ac stuff on classic cars around town so ill take his word for it. i went and picked it up and i swapped the dryer around today, a new expansion valve will show up friday and ill pull the box back out AGAIN and change it. will drop her off again monday if all goes to plan.

other than that, i havnt been active on the site much because ive just been driving the truck and enjoying it. i took her to toyota jamboree a little while back in texas, was a blast. i ended up needing lower tcase gears for my tire size so i pulled the case and dropped it off, had a set of marlin 4.7s slapped in. great low range now. i also snagged one of the retractable cup holders from caribou a few weeks ago. its a pretty slick little doodad.

**EDIT**

wanted to follow up on my AC system install for anyone that was using this thread as inspiration. i replaced my brand new denso expansion valve with another denso brand new expansion valve and swapped my dryer around the proper direction, and had the system vac'ed and charged. it kicked on and was working, and then i remembered i never hooked up the vac lines on the idle up valve. i had to use a T in the line from the PS to the valve and then to the throttle body. now the system is working great.

to recap on parts and the job in general

i pulled the complete system from an 88 pickup.

bought a new compressor, evap coil, condenser, thermistor, expansion valve, dryer, almost all denso parts, from rockauto except for the thermistor. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT COMPRESSOR! there are two versions.

youll need the little mounts for the condenser up front also, i pulled some from a toyota previa. i used some lines for the dryer off another toyota car as well, i just used a hand bender to shape them as needed.

the holes in the firewall will need to be drilled. i used a step bit and just kept sizing up until the grommet fit, you can buy the firewall grommets new from toyota. youll need a third hole for the drain hose. the holes are all dimpled in the firewall for easy placement from the factory.

your harness is all plug and play, very easy. the box fits in place with no mods. just drop the glovebox and remove the little cross bar that holds the glovebox hinges. there are a combination of little m6 bolts and screws with a 10mm head on them holding the evap box in place.

you need to get some adaptors for the compressor. it most liekly will not come with the ports on top either, so track some of those down. i saved the ones off the old oem compressor from my parts truck. for the inside valve i bought a 45 degree elbow fitting, because i could easily get the gauges to attach.
use new orings , the green ones. and oil them with reefer oil when you install. the compressor takes something like 4-6oz of oil i cant remember but its in the install book for the compressor.

the new txv and thermistor goes inside no problem and are easy to replace, i suggest some new foam strips on the edges of the box where it meets the other duct work for good air seal.

thats really all i can think of, good luck! its a hell of a fun mod and well worth the trouble.

today in my parkinglot at work, it was 39% humidity, and 98 degrees. i was blowing 45 degrees at my vents, i think thats pretty good.

72 is pretty weak. My pickup blows 39 out the vent and my 4Runner blows 40.

Maybe worth mentioning they are both on R12. I did have an R134a converted system at one point but even it blew 45 at its best.

idk what to tell ya. i may try and jump on the interstate for a while. is yours blowing 40 on startup in 100 degrees and 40% humidity? lol because thats alot of overcome. im not using a parallel flow condenser or r12 so i know those things do hinder performance. i may try another temp gun today and see if i can see difference numbers.

My nephew tells me R134 doesn't have near the heat of evaporation as R12. (Which is a reason it is higher pressure). So 'they' say.

edit to this. i went and bought a new temp gun today and shot temps at the center vents. blowing a consistent 44-46 degrees after a few minutes driving around. its 93 degrees and 47 percent humidity today.

That sounds about right. Matches what I was seeing with the same setup.

Just for data:
1987 4Runner 22RE MT with 4Runner condenser (two layers), serpentine flow, R12: Consistent 40 or 41 degrees at vent when driving regardless of weather.
1988 Pickup 22RE MT with Pickup condenser (single layer), parallel flow (aftermarket), R12: Consistent 38 or 39 degrees at vent when driving regardless of weather.

I suppose I should start a new thread titled “cheap restoration turned expensive wheeling rig” lol. Two years to the date since I did the SAS and I use this truck all the time. My Sky springs settled way too much over time. The rears are in a W already and I actually have a set of their new HD packs in the garage. The single 4.7 case I installed is great but left me still wanting a middle gearing option so I have been building a set of duals in my garage. I finally ditched my ARB bumper after it damn near ripped off trying to winch someone up a hill, I did an addicted Offroad bumper and installed a weld on brace kit behind it. I’ve been installing an sPOD as well, and running everything through it. ALSO I ditched my halogen lamps for the Morimoto Holley lamps last week, they are very nice. I fell short on putting updates here, but here are some pics to catch up.

Great pics, always loved your truck. I completely understand the single 4.7 issue, I have a single 4.7 case also, and while it is fantastic, there have been times where I longed for regular old low gear instead of this ultra low. I don't think I really offroad enough anymore to warrant dual cases.

marlin transmission flop

i pondered even bringing this up, but i hope that maybe it will save someone some heartache in the future. if you followed this build you know i splurged on a bullet proof marlin transmission. i had problems from the start. it wouldnt shift. i had to pull it and send it back to marlin, a GIANT pain. they told me they went through it and it was perfectly fine, they could find no issues and it was already on its way back to me. not what i wanted to hear exactly.. anyways after reinstalling i had the same problems. another call to marlin and the response was something like, maybe its a user error.. well pulling it a 3rd time wasnt in my cards. i hit the threads and many people suggested many different fixes, different oils and such, bleeding clutch, blah blah. i tried everything. damn thing never like 2nd gear. sometimes others. the one year warranty went way to quick, i had other irons in the fire and even though i should have pulled it myself AGAin i didnt, primarily because marlin assured me it was a good transmission. fast forward to this week a nd i have it out because im doing dual cases and i really wanted the damn thing to shift smooth, also it started leaking gear oil out of the front of the transmission. keep in mind, this transmission has MAYBE 5000 miles on it. in fact, alot of guys told me the issue would go away after it broke in more. i couldnt afford to spend another 2 grand on marlin to look at it, not that i would at this point, so i took it to a local guy. after he got it torn down i went to see the results. turns out marlins rebuilders were just jamming everything together with no spacing between the gears and the synchros. thats why it couldnt shift, and thats why i could only get into certain gears at a dead stop. so now im in for a full rebuild, again, and this time i have to replace several main gears.

all of this to say, i just dont recommend them for rebuilds anymore. their time has come and gone, and i fear with the passing of marlin the company has gone to ˟˟˟˟. i would still use them as a parts vendor in a heartbeat, but to be honest even that is dwindling because i noticed today they dont even have flywheels and clutches anymore, what a shame. save yourself heartache and lots of money, find a local shop and rebuild, or DIY if you can.

Well that stinks, I suppose that even reputable shops are at the mercy of whoever is on staff to be the transmission builder that day. Someone did not know what they were doing. I wonder if they even opened it up on the return, I guess you'll never know.
