Has anybody who has a 22re that sounds/sounded like a diesel tried changing the rocker arm to quiet the engine down and if so did it work because when I rebuilt my engine last year that was one thing I didn't thing to replace and the truck has sounded like crap ever since now somebody told me maybe it's the timing chain but I replaced that and the noise has been there since day on. Any help would be great the truck has gotten on my last nerve and is about to go..

 

I take it you know how to correctly adjust them?
Are there odd wear patterns on the rocker arm pads, camshaft, or ends of the rockers.. Ends of the rockers should have an hourglass pattern.

I've found that these motors have a bit of variety in rocker arm design and configuration - need to figure out how to get it all lined up correctly AND have the valve clearances OK.. Can be a pain.

 

My question was the same as dcg's. Have the valve clearances been adjusted lately? I just got done putting my engine back together and I set everything at 0.008/0.012 cold when I assembled the long block. I've pulled the cover to check the valves three times in the 1000 miles so far and the first two times they needed a little tweak and the last time they were right on where I'd set them. But the first time after running the engine, a couple of them were pretty far off and if they haven't been adjusted lately, that could make them noisy.

 

They are correctly adjusted to the spec's for the aftermarket cam I have. I didn't notice any weird wear pattern on them. The whole thing is annoying me..

 

Recent noise or has it always been this way?
Would you know a timing chain rattle if you heard it?

 

Been like this since I rebuilt it a year ago. I thought about the timing chain. The noise kinda goes away when you rev the engine. Also when engine was rebuilt did the whole timing chain kit.

 

aftermarket chain tensioners tend to suck and inadequately apply pressure to the timing chain allow it to rattle, and or hit the cover.

the valves should be adjusted cold, then again after the motors HOT. (ie, let it warm up to operating temp turn it off pull the cover and adjust the valves to spec again you'll be surprised how loose they are.

 

I think I'm going to do it with a dial indicator from the top instead of feeler guage next time I do it. I bet I can get a more accurate reading.
