Changing belts

So I am planning on getting some new belts and installing them my self...only problem I have no idea what I'm doing and dont know what my 2 belts are even called. Guessing one is a fan belt.

Anyway how do I change those suckers out? Do I have to remove the fan or something?

Thank you.
Is the P/S and fan on the same belt or is that one each?

How do I put them on? I cant really see a way past the fan assembly or thru the pulleys. Or which bolts to loosen. It is really hard to find info on the net for this...probably way easier then I think it is maybe?

Fan belt is the inner most, drives the water pump (and fan connected to it) and the alternator. To remove, loosen the alternator and swing it in to put slack in the belt. It'll come off around the fan.

A/C or power steering belt is next, loosen the center bolt in the idler pulley then loosen the tension adjuster bolt to put slack in the belt. It too will come off over the fan.

Go get a Hanes Manual at Autozone. You'll thank me.

You have to take off the fan (?), or maybe you can get the belts over it, one blade at a time (easier if you take off the fan). I changed mine out when I changed the radiator, water pump, and timing belt - so I had the fan off. First, look around for tensioner bolts and loosen them, then you'll be able to pull the belts off.

It's like a puzzle, man! Just mess around with it, and you'll figure it out. The Hanes Manual will help you more than the $10 - $15 you spend on it...I promise!!!

On a side note: If you go to Autozone.com, there is a link on the left that says "Repair Info". This is a free, online version of the Hanes Manual!

You don't need to take the fan or the fan shroud off. Mine has the shroud and I just slip the belt in the shroud, then put the top of the belt between two fan blades and slide the bottom of the belt underneath and around the lower portion of the fan.

I just did my belts in the time I posted my last post above.. No need for the fan shroud to be removed.. Just rotate the fan while you pull the belts off.. Loosen the nut on the pulley and loosen the nut to the left of it. for the back belt loosen the bracket bolt on the alternator. Push it up and the belt with be loose. Reverse for putting on..

go download the factory service manual for your truck.. you'll find basically all the answers you'll ever need in there.

just remember to never cut the old belts off.. just in case the new ones you got are somehow the wrong size you wont be able to drive back to the parts store to get the right ones.

I gotta ask......how would you know that?

Here's a tip, too.......totally unrelated: Never drain the diff's, tranny, t-case, etc. until you're sure you can remove the fill plug. In case you hadn't thought of it. I guess it has been posted at YT often enough, though.

Very easy! Just route the belts around the fan. Just write down the way the belts run.
