Pretty self explanatory. Seems to be happening mostly during engine deceleration. What do you think? Normal engine noise?

Also I noticed the engine is a little bumbly at idle sometimes. Thinking it might be distributor cap/rotor.

Thanks in advance!

You can check the timing chain guide by removing the valve cover and looking down the front of the motor with a flashlight.

Hmm weird the link works for me! Anyone else having that issue? I'll check to make sure the privacy is set properly.

Going to take the valve cover off tomorrow to check. I adjusted my valve clearances a while back and a double check sounds like a good idea while I look at the timing chain guide as well. Hopefully it's not the timing chain guide, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised if it is.

It certainly sounds excessive on the noise to me! But it runs perfectly at speed

Hmm, I had a similar issue. My 22re sounded like a diesel for a good minute. Pop that valve cover and check the guides. If they look good then it might be the piston tensioner. Mine was stuck open and gave the chain a lot

id take a look at the timing set. even if its not bad, a set of new metal guides from engnbldr are never a bad idea.

It sure does sound like the chain huh.

How involved is changing that timing guide? I would have to take the head off, correct?

Also re:piston tensioner. Looks like you've dismantled quite a bit to get to that. Any easy way to check?

Thanks for the replies. Super sorry about the video linky not work at random intervals. I have no idea what's up with that.

Assuming the same instructions found here to get to the piston tensioner

Upon double checking my valve clearances, discovered that the cyl1 intake valve had zero clearance. Redid all of them anyway because with that kind of a messup I didn't trust my previous job. This time adjusted everything to 0.008" and 0.011" cold based on a recommendation I found online. Previously I tried 0.008" and 0.012" hot which I think I messed up because the engine was indeed cold by the time I was done (was my first time doing that and took a bit longer).

Also took a video of the chain tension. The guide seems to be in place and everything seems right to me on the timing chain.

Can someone confirm this is the right amount of tension, or is this too loose? (which would suggest piston tensioner)

Thanks for the help everyone, it is much appreciated

Noise was gone for a few mins while engine was cold, after it warmed up came right back.

Also got some lovely chuffy puffclouds from the exhaust and seems to want to chuff slightly just before returning back to idle after revving. Maybe it was doing this before and I just never noticed it.

Anyway yeah, valve adjustment did not do the trick- even though one of the intake valves was indeed out of whack.

I take it back!

After driving for a day, the noise is greatly diminished. Seems the valve adjustment did help a lot! Hallelujah!

Today I seafoamed it and installed a new rotor & cap. She is purring like a kitten.

Only one longstanding issue to try to figure out.. Why the heck I am getting hard starts and low idle upon starting. Going to do a new thread for that one.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!
