To cat or no cat... that is the question?

That is what I thought!?!? I also thought the smell came from the cat when it was going bad. I have ran vehicles straight before and the only smell I got was engine. You guys remember that gas company commercial "Hey Jeremy, is that 93 octane your wearing?" Funny stuff.

Food For Thought
Please keep it on. I just came across a site while I was looking to recycle my old cat and this came up. "Smog is a big problem in Canada and one which affects the health of all Canadians. In fact, in a recent report, the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) estimated that smog- related premature mortality accounts for approximately 5,800 deaths annually in Ontario. Across Canada, cars, trucks and buses are major sources of smog pollution, especially in densely populated urban areas. Smog-forming pollutants include nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and fine particulate matter. A twelve year old vehicle produces 17 times more smog-forming emissions than a brand new 2007 vehicle."http://www.carheaven.ca/about/why.aspx. Yes this is Cdn. stat. but come on. I'm not trying to be "that guy" just thought since your wife is pregnant it might change your mind, set a good example for your young one. We all may sound like environmental lobbyists, but like was mentioned in one of the above posts you can get a cat for $60. Please at least do that and don't be offended when we're all just trying to do our part. Thanks.

I feel you. And honestly... I would either ditch it, or get a high flow cat and up the pipe diameter by half an inch. When I was younger I took the cat off, beat all the honeycomb out of it and reinstalled it hollow. ha ha! What can I say... I save lives, not planets. (btw, I am still using a cat for all the earthfirsters)

No, there were several that offered there opinions and left it at that and then there were some with a superiority complex. Look, everybody knows about search, all of you guys tell them every time a question is asked. Sometimes others question maybe different than past or maybe they have a specific they want to know, or maybe they just want to feel part of the YT community. So, how about back off, if you do not want to help or benefit the person asking, click on to the next thread.
Your question was answered, there is NO reason to remove it. I even gave you my experience with it... So if that is the attitude you are going to have why don't you go to the next forum...

These threads are soooo much fun.
Btw, the issue isn't black and white around here at all. It's just that the people that are against gutting the emissions are louder than the people for it.
Wel, that and the fact that the mods have threatened bans for saying you have done it too.

hee hee. This is hilarious... it's 4X4 politics. We should go to war, it's the right thing to do for the future of our nation. No we need to do whats right for the economy and we should end the war. I agree... these posts are so much fun it's nauseating. But don't try to tell me that you guys are seriously that concerned about it because you could always ditch your lifted, locked, big tire having four wheel drives and buy a toyota prius. Oh yeah... and don't take your cat off because it actually does rob you of power.
much love to all... =P

Guys, the catalytic converter works. It makes a huge difference in what comes out your tail pipe. Keeping the larger picture in perspective is a good thing when your sport is often under fire from environmentalists. Typically they are off base, but if we start making a habit of removing our smog equipment, well, they won't be so off base anymore. Let's not empower them.
As for power, lowering your backpressure will increase the RPM at which your engine scavenges. Having just had a cat stolen, I can assure you my truck was gutless with out that back pressure. The intake is to restrictive to allow it to rev that high, the EGR function is usually reduced leading to more predetonation and corresponding retarding of timing/loss of performance, and most importantly, the engine itself likely won't hold together well enough to rev to say 6500+ RPM where it will might run efficiently with no back pressure. You actually CAN lose power by doing this depending on what else you have modified.
The engine is a system and while better breathing is good, one must look at the whole, not just one part for gains. A high flow cat and larger cat back exhaust have allowed my totally stock truck to hit red line with ease when it struggled before. It climbs almost all hills in 4th (auto) instead of 3rd. Good, found a big restriction which improved partial throttle performance, the true factor in drive-ability. I might do some minor intake modifications to attempt to seat-of-the-pants balance the system but that's about it. Having your exhaust work best where the intake does not is a great way to feel your money has been wasted.
