I took mine off because it was clogged and also I didn't want a cat. But the smell is annoying and the power loss is noticeable on the low end.

I replaced my stock cat with a univeral 2.5" Carsound cat ($60 off e-bay) when I went to a larger exhaust. I wouldn't run with no cat, too loud for one thing and illegal for another. BTW be sure and recycle your old cat, big $$$ for those.

I ditched mine when I redid my rusted (falling apart) exhaust. I am adding 4-6 qts of oil between oil changes, and worried that burning so much oil would foul/clog a cat. Since I was going for budget, and there are no emmisions in my county, I left if off.
When/If I rebuild the engine, I plan to install a cat.

edit: Initially, I cut off everything from in front of the cat and back, and added a 30" cherry-bomb with a turn out. WAY MORE POWER all around! I have since added a quieter muffler.

mt_goat, correct me if I'm wrong, but your motor won't run without a cat right?

With the ODB-2 and all...

Back to the thread, I didn't see any loss in power anywhere. My truck runs great and you'll find that if you're tuned well and keep it maintained the exhaust doesn't stink that bad at all.

I'll probably add a high flow cat soon though just to be legal, but for now no cat flows a hell of a lot better than a high mileage clogged up one...

It will run fine but, it will throw a CEL. Actually, I was throwing a P0420 even with the new cat, but that's because the 2001 ECU was looking for 2 cats and I only put on one. I wasn't about to put 2 cats on a 93 truck so I found a way around the P0420 with the help of this: http://www.urdusa.com/product_info.p..._id=1230100014

I'd run one. Not only for emissions, but because I have yet to hear a vehicle that I think sounds better without one. That may just be my taste though.

Anything that you run behind your headers will reduce power. That's a fact, plain and simple. Y'all can argue it till your.... As far as sound, no cat is gonna be alot louder. I run just the original beat to sh.. old cat that has multiple holes in it, with NO muffler. It sounds sweet. When I get frisky I get under there and take the cat off, leaving my exhaust open from the headers back. It makes my truck roar like a snarling demon, along with the additional steroid boost of power. SERIOUS difference, just try like I'm sayin' then call me a liar.

With all the talk of theft of these things on here lately, couldn't you recycle the old one for the cost of a new one?

Yep, my new one was $60 and I got $140 for my old one. But I did pay a guy to weld it in so there goes most of the the profit. I've heard some guys have had a hard time getting the muffler shop to let them keep the old one, I made sure before he started building the exhaust system that I was going to get the old cat back.

Hey newbie... treat the other people around here with respect. He was not being a smart ass, he was 100% correct... here we go again, is a VERY appropriate response. Search and you will see how the topic of cat removal is handled. If you insist on being a dumb ass and removing your cat you can remove this board from your favorites, we don't want you or your opinions here. See the tread lightly icon up top, thats sets the standard for the conduct of members here, obey by it or leave.....ok!

Now, removing your cat will do nothing but make your exhaust loud, SUPER stinky, and set you up for a 25K fine in some states. A new 2.25" cat is 50 or 60 bucks, buy it and have it welded in . All cats these days are hi-flow, so you don't have to worry about it.

I ran w/out a cat for a while when I was younger and "knew" more. It was the worst mod I did to my truck. It stank so bad I could no longer use my rear window when driving.

What is it with some people here? I was simply asking a pros and cons question. I am not some young punk and this isn't my first car and/or forum. I was just making discussion and asking about my particular issues, when I searched, i never found my question, but then again I am a "newbie". If it is all "treat the other people around here with respect" then why don't some of you guys follow it? To the others that answered my question, thanks.

I took myne off for about 6 months with a straight pipe bolted in there. with my 40 series flowmaster and 3.0 engine it sounded much louder and loved it. The only problem was trying to get rid of the exhaust leak I would get every month or so until i would goop it up to seal it agian. If i wasnt so lazy i would weld it in place of my cat and re-install it every 2 years for smog. didnt notice any loss or gain in power.

Thanks man, that was the kind of answers I am looking for. I have dumped bukoo bucks into getting this thing running right and still troubleshooting errors. With the wifey-to-be 8 months prego, money is getting tight. There is not emissions here, but I do like to do my part. I may just get him to run pipe and in the next couple months get one welded in.

hell yea if u have no emission then i would weld in straight pipe and leave it 4 ever. I havent heard of it hurting anything because of the little less back pressure u will lose. Good luck

No, there were several that offered there opinions and left it at that and then there were some with a superiority complex. Look, everybody knows about search, all of you guys tell them every time a question is asked. Sometimes others question maybe different than past or maybe they have a specific they want to know, or maybe they just want to feel part of the YT community. So, how about back off, if you do not want to help or benefit the person asking, click on to the next thread.

When I picked up my 87 runner my cat was a little restricted so I did away and installed all new pipe and muffler myself. The smell IS too much with the back window down. Its a little louder too but not too loud. I wish I had remembered to save my old one instead of tossing it in the dumpster, I would have sold it and bought a new one. Arent vehicles 20 yrs and older exempt from inspection anyway?
