Can it be Towed?
#1
I own a 1995 Tacoma 4x4, Manual 5-speed, manual Transfer Case, Manual Hubs. My question is, Can I tow it 4-down behind my motor home? Nobody wants to touch this question, not even my Toyota Dealership, some say no problem, some say no way. Looking for someone who knows Toyota Trannys, If it's a manual, I'd think it's a no brainer, but.................. Thanks, Mitch

people do it ALL THE TIME. you're fine doing it. unlock your hubs t-case and tranny in neutral and lock your steering centered. and as chris said, disconnect your driveshafts if thats something you feel comfortable doing

This may not help you much, but....
My 2K 4R Ltd is auto and I tow it 4 down. I bought a Remco DS Disconnect for the rear, place my trans in neutral, TC in 2H and the ign key in acc. DO NOT lock your steering in center, leaving it unlocked will allow the vehicle to track behind the MH. I have towed mine for ~ 20K miles without any problems at hiway speeds from 55 to 65, although most of the times it's around 60.
You are correct about Toyota or dealers, they will not say it can be towed. I put my trans in neutral and the TC in 2H and crawled under the front and could turn my front DS, so I figured it was not being driven, and took my chance with it. I knew my rear DS would turn the auto trans, so I got the Remco.
The Remco disconect can be purchased and grated onto your DS, or you can buy a complete assy. I bought the assy so my OEM DS is on a shelf in the garage if I want to install it.

The best way, as long as it's not for a really long time is just rent a Pull-Up Uhaul Trailer, I've done this a lot...not too expensive at all and it's a very safe way to haul it.
Now days they even have guards on the front you can get as well to protect it from debris on the way.
...well if I had read the post carefully you said behind your motor home so I am assuming it's for a long trip...if thats the case, car dolly would be the best bet.
Good luck.

I read that you tow it in transmission 1st gear, transfercase in neutral, hubs unlocked, and you dont need to disconnect the driveshafts, because the transfer case is in neutral, steering unlocked, battery disconnected.... yeah, dont tow unless all four are off the ground or all 4 are on the ground

If you tow it a ton get a driveshaft disconnect like Ron(fla) said, otherwise disconnect it... and even if you have ADD you will be fine up front as thats no differnt that driving around everyday, the front shaft doesnt spin. You dont want to put the xcase in N thou, as that is 4wd N, not true neutral.
Check out marlincrawler.com I hear he has some good info on flat towing.
I towed my 4runner accross the country on a dolly.. removed the rear shaft and left the key in the "off" positon. The dolly itself has a rotating head where the front tires attach... if you leave the key on you are asking for some serious trouble at fwy speeds... I towed mine for 3000 miles, averaging 65, adn occasionaly 75 when the winds would allow (75 was the limit on the truck) no problems at all.

Why? It's standard procedure to leave the key in ACC position when towing 4 down. This will unlock the steering so that the vehicle will track behind the MH. If the steering is locked, the front end will be dragged sideways when turning and something will break.
