Question Can anyone tell me what this connector is to?

Hey all,

New here. I got a '91 Pickup for free because this lady didn't want it after some rodent ate through some wiring. So I'm trying to get it running again, and I think I'm almost there after a fuel pump replacement and I just got the spark plugs and wires done. Then I found this connector hanging by itself after I took the giant tubing off to get to spark plugs 2 & 4. It's behind the alternator right below spark plug #2. It's a 3VZE. Given the dirt it's been unplugged before I got it and I can't find any connectors nearby that it may have gone too. I figured I'd try you fine folks to see if you can shed any light on what this goes too.

The shape of the connector MIGHT be well known to someone, but if you're hoping for help from someone with an EWD you probably need to tell us the color of the wire. (Almost certainly a base color plus a colored stripe.)

Do you have 4wd? ADD? Do you have a water-temperature sensor in the upper radiator hose connection?

What's your oil pressure look like? Looks a little different than mine but it's in the right location to be the oil pressure sensor wire. Mine connects to a pigtail just below and toward the rear of the alternator. 88 4Runner 3.0.

Go more or less straight down with it as far as wire will go --- is there a mate for it? It's not oil pressure sensor plug. Less likely is a mate along fender wall. You should be able to find match in one of these 2 areas.

Also, not every connector on the wiring harness is always attached to something depending on options equipped. As mentioned above, the wire color will allow reference to the manual.

that's the intermediary connector that goes to the axle.

Sorry for the delay, haven't been able to touch the truck with life going on and us probably replacing my daily driver really soon.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah it's a 4x4 V6. I remember the lady I got it from mentioning something about the axle. She wasn't really specific but maybe this is what she was talking about.

It looks like it has a shorting pin attached to it. Vehicles without ADD have a shorting pin on the connector. I assume you have manual locking hubs.

You know, a shorting pin would explain what we're looking at in that picture!

But "shorting" that connector would illuminate the 4wd light. Maybe it is the opposite of shorting: just there to keep crap out of the connector.

In the event it helps, here's a picture of an ADD. If you don't have this, I'm voting with rustypigeon.

The shorting pin connects the two wires going to that connector. If the vehicle had ADD that connector would go to the ADD Indicator switch.





The shorting pin off a spare 22RE harness I have laying around...

That looks just like the ADD indicator wire. Look at the picture Scope posted!
