Must. I've tried a lot of times to take the head bolts out and not disturb the HG. Perhaps there is a secret. Probably not.

THe head is really heavy without an engine lift, I could never have pulled mine without mangeling the gasket. I am not sure how I am getting it back in. (that is with both manifolds on.

i have access to an engine lift and wutever else auto shop wise i may need. does that change te situation?

I would think that would make it a lot easier, in case you need to do any work on the head. I really wish I had a lift.

yea, i know a guy that owns a shop and he lets me use whatever whenever. im actually gonna try and get myself a job workin there part time so i can make some money and be able to work on my truck. lol. its all about contacts.

I did my headgasket so far with nothing but regular handtools and a torque wrench and an extra hand setting the head on, And Im short with a slightly lifted truck so it was interesting

Ask Ted(engnbldr@engnbldr.com) for advise on swapping the cam without changing the HG. It can and has been done.

You'll also need to make sure your rocker arms are in very very good shape or else you can destroy that nice new cam shaft.

Another thing that will vary with each engine: Three of my bolts would not come out of the head after they were loose from the block. There was so much crap and goop packed around them that I had to pound them out after the head was off. I had to use a 1/2 impact drive socket and about three feet of cheater bar on an 18 inch long breaker to loosen one of them, and it took all that to go 1/2 turn. I was afraid the breaker bar was going to snap. It held, and it was just a craftsman. I hid below the front of the truck while I turned it. I thinki if that happens, your gasket might suffer.

You need to eat some wheaties! Get someone to help you or remove a manifold. Heck when I did my head gasket(8 years ago I was only 140 lbs at 5'9" and I managed to lift out the head with both manifolds. But to be on the safe side get someone to help you. You do not need a engine lift it will probably get in your way.

don't remember you saying how many miles on it, but you may want to look at further preventive stuff.
HG?--there seems to be some consensus that if low mileage, if careful, if everything goes well, you can skip replacement.
BTW, did you ask Ted? i'd be interested in his response.

You probably need either new rocker arms or have your current ones ground.

When I rebuilt I opted for a 268 cam and had my rockers just reground since a new set would have been about $200. Then I put some Crane break-in lube with high moly count to help the new cam and rockers wear into each other better.

Honestly, unless you're really hot on this idea, a new cam isn't going to do much. I'm glad I did the swap, but with the whole engine apart it was very convenient. But the 268 as opposed to stock is only a little different, and I think the 261 is even less different.

True about the cam not making much of a difference in a stock engine. Unfortunantly mild cams are the only thing that you can put on a 22RE without seriously effecting EFI. 268 is mild, but with a full exhaust, header and a nice intake and messing with timing, will be a huge improvement over stock. All those things compliment eachother. A mild cam is a step in the right direction. Long duration cams are junk in a 22RE unless seriously and highly modified.

ive got a better exhaust, basically a straight pipe with the cat. i rly dont plan on doing headers, ive got a k&n filter for the intake, and im looking into different ways to improve that without spending a bunch of money, and every step in the right direction is a step id like to take. lol. for $100 a little more power may be worth it. the timing im not too sure about. the mech im gonna be working with used to race yota engines though, so im not too worried about lack of experiance and information.

so if ive taken it all in right, i can install nothing but the new cam with no other changes or add-ons? now one more thing. since im going to have the engine opened up, if and when this happens, whats the general consensus on boring out? lol. if i can do it all for free, just buying parts, as long as i can afford the parts id love to do it.
