Cam options for a 22RE

Woo Hoo! My fist post! Ok, I need a new cam for my 22RE. I have engnbldr's RV cam, (love it) but the loabs are in bad shape, and I dont think that can be refinished... I have noticed that engnbldr has changed his RV cam profile a little, from 270° .430 to 268° .425. Anyway what is a good cam for my DD? I do mostly highway and street driving, and I want more passing powa! I've kinda narrowed it down to EB, TRD stage 2, DOA, or LC.

My current mods are: K&N drop in, EB's RV cam, EB's O/S valves, springs, metal TC kit, LC's header, magnaflow exhaust sys, 4.88 gears and 33's (93 22RE 5spd)

Thanks for the info guys! Later...

Little known fact, TRD rebrands Crane Cams... I just got a head from J and C Enterprises with the level 2 Crane Cam in it. Of course, I haven't installed it yet so I can't vouch for it, but I have high hopes.

That said, I hear really good things about the engnbldr cams too...

the EB 270 and 268 are 2 different cams. the 270 is more of a freeway cam, while the 268 is more of an all-around camshaft. the 261c would be a good choice for offroad or stump pulling applications.

I know this is a couple months old, but whatever you do do not get the TRD II cam, IT WILL NOT WORK WELL with you stock efi. I had one in my 95, with a header, exhaust, and all TRD says you need.. all it did was make the exhaust stink and drop the mileage.. no power.. the efi cant hadle it...

i am trying to decide between the engnbldr 261 or 268

The DOA C270 is a pretty good cam.I just put one in about three weeks ago and can really tell a difference. It's no x-runner, but it has more low-end, and the powerband is fatter.

And thats just with headers & cam.

I disagree with you... My efi handles the TRD stage 2 came just fine.

Things were softened up down low a little but there is definitely a power increase in the upper rpm ranges. My truck is happier in the midrange rpm's now than it ever was anywhere in the powerband.

It just feels smoother in the mid. It used to vibrate in the upper rpms so I always shifted it, but now it feels right at home riding 3rd gear at 35mpg and when I mash it it actually goes now.

It didn't wake up until I had a new exhaust installed though, but it is definitely running good now. With the cam, exhaust, bigger valves, and other mods mine isn't running too badly these days...

From 3500 up there may have been a slight increase in power... but below that my truck ran SOOO rich I couldnt ever have the back window down anymore..

I took it to toytoa (several times), nothing was wrong... The new TRD literate says that the cam requires a modified fuel injection... when I got mine the literature didnt say that.

I was getting 18 mpg before, and after i was lucky to get 14....

I have talked with several engine guys, who have heard of similar experiances to mine.... glad you have better luck with it than I did.

Mine is the Crane Cams version and it didn't say anything about needing a modified fuel injection system either.

I do ping right now, but I figure that's due to carbon or a stuffed up EGR. I haven't had a chance to nail the problem yet.

As far as the cam goes, it seems fine though.

figures the new TRD catlog isnt as detailed as the one before it...

The one after I got mine said that the Stage II was desiged for 1600-5400(?), required header, tuned exhaust, intake, and fuel injection modificaton..

Now it just says power depends on engine modifacations.

Maybe they have changed it??

What cam do you have from crane? Looking at their website now.

Anyone have info similar to this on the stock cam? I have the duration and such, but the RPM numbers would be nice.

The bummer is where I cruise, and where I want power. With my gears I cruise about 3100-3200, but want bottom end DOH

Crane makes the cams for TRD. Toyota just rebrands them. It's the same as the Stage 2 TRD cam...

The model is the 704-0012:

I have seen the numbers for the stock cam on the web but I don't recall where... I'll look around when I get off work tonight for it.

New home of engine builder

Any one looking to rebuild or upgrade there 20R 22R or 22 RE, I found a great place to get parts, custom camshaft, and advice. Great shipping prices too. Bill at Redline Cams & Cranks, Albany Oregon 1-541-968-4187, some of his cams are on EBay. He is taking over for "EPN" engine parts network out of Portland Oregon.
