buttons on steering wheel?

95 4runner, SR5, V6, 4X4, auto....What do the buttons on the steering wheel do? The writing that was once there is worn off. I suspect cruise control, but I don't want to just start pushing them unless I know which is which. One on the left hand side and two on the right.....

Left most button is Cruise on/Off and the others are for set/accelerate and cancel. I'll see if I can find a pic. I have cruise too, but something is disconnected somewhere because none of the buttons do anything.

I am planning to retrofit cruise control to my 4R, as it came out of factory without it and I am wondering lately - how are the signals from those switches transfered from the wheel into dash? There's no clock spring as there's no airbag, and there's only one-pin slider for horn. Google some photos of button-equipped steering wheel, but no simple explanation there. According to schematic signals ARE resistance coded, yet still, there are three wires going into slip ring on a diagram. Can't see any more slip rings the one on the pictures though.... Anyone would be willing to explain?
