So am I the first with this little problem? Blown head gasket at 225k lead to a total rebuild. Almost there and then this! Yes, I was torqing the head bolts per the FSM. Anyone know if there is a place that sells just the towers? I really don’t wanna shell out $200 plus for a while rocker set. I was so close!
UPDATE*
I found the cause of the break. The new head I purchased with cam had bearing caps and bolts with a flat washer AND a lock washer also. I assumed (I know) that that was the way it should be so I plastigauged everything an torqued them down with both washers installed. After breaking the tower I took a closer look at things and the tower made contact with the nut on the cap. I looked at my old head and there was just the lock washer so more clearance was provided.
Thank you for the link. I searched google from one end to the other and didn't find anything last night at 10pm. Of course I called the dealer this morning and they searched inventory and found 3 in the entire country. They sell them for $56 each.
Not to add to your concerns, but that bolt/washer/washer clearly does not belong there. I don't know much about the 22re, but my 3VZE uses 8mm J.I.S. flange bolts to hold the cam bearing caps. No washers.
For that matter, pretty much every bolt on my truck is a J.I.S. flange bolt. What size wrench does your bolt take? 13mm? That's a dead giveaway -- J.I.S. bolts have 8, 10,12, 17mm heads.
That head may be new-to-you, but it's not a new head. Rebuilt maybe. On some guy's front porch.
But at least you figured out why the tower broke, so it won't happen to your replacement.
Yes, its a brand new dnj head an cam from redline cranks and cams (the guy that used to grind cranks for engbldr). The bolt is a 12mm. I called them to warn them to let folks know that the extra washer should not be there so if other people buy one of their heads they wont end up like me. H
ere is a pic of the same bolt on my OEM factory head. Toyota used lock washers under 12mm bolts to hold down the bearing caps on my 1986 22re. I would prefer the flange bolt set up since it would gaul the bearing cap holder less.
i used the original head, machine shop shaved it, and removed some broken bolts from some of the threads. the cam was wiped, so installed new rockers, springs, valves and tower, too.
UPDATE***THE TOWERS ON THE ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLY ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE FROM THE DEALER OR ANY AFTER MARKET WEBSITES I HAVE FOUND. (15 OR SO). so DONT break yours!! I have an email inquiry into two different parts houses in Japan and am waiting to hear back.
My head came with valves and springs.
if they're discontinued in the USA then I doubt the Japan exporters like Amayama will fare any better.
Is there no Pick Your Part auto yard(or similar) nearby? That part fits a very broad range of years.
called 5 junk yards today and the closest I got was a 94 corolla. everyone told me they pull most motors for resale and don't want to part out unless they are non runners.
That's crazy. Down here in So Cal getting 22RE trucks into the yards is a daily occurrence. And the PYP yards will let you buy as little, or as much, as you want.
The closest ones to me are a bit of a drive, so i only go when they get first gen 4Runners, otherwise I'd be happy to grab a rocker assy for you. I just never know when.
Thanks Jimkola for the offer. Yes Wallytoo I have seen a bunch of used and rebuild complete assys for sale but I just need the number 5 tower not the whole rocker arm assy. $20 vs $100 plus depending on who is selling! I was able to find the part for $20 at an engine builder here locally who deals in 22r/re stuff. He buys cores and builds them and has a bunch of stuff in a pile. I guess the businesses that are doing complete Motors for rebuilds are snatching up the cores locally and building and reselling so that's why they are so scarce? Kind of feel like I found a needle in the haystack after all the calls and emails I have sent in the last few days! fwiw LCE said that they only rebuild core rocker assys and they have parts but want to sell you the complete unit rather than just a piece of it.
