ok i have decided that nothing is wrong with the engine, the noise seem's to be coming from the bellhousing, but i have no idea what, if its the clutch, pilot bearing, throwout bearing? pressure plate? anyone have an idea. it makes the noise the worst when your driving and let your foot off the gas completely if you hold it steady noise is gone. and at idle it makes the noise. clutch doesn't seem to have any effect on it.

Only guess I have ........

on the very back of the motor there is a thin steel plate. It is held on with one or sometimes two little 12 mm bolts.

That bolt is special !!!! The head is thin to allow a gap between it and the flywheel. IF the wrong bolt is used it can make a horrible racket. this would go away pretty quick though as the bolt head wears down.

I personally would take out the motor and inspect. After I did a lot of listening and testing of course.

debating whether or not to do a whole clutch replacement. its original but only has 150,000 on it and it seem's to be fine. i bought the 4runner with a blown engine so i had never driven it before i put the new engine in it

A brand new high quality Sacs brand clutch can be purchased from Schucks auto parts for the super cheep price of 90 bucks.

It's well worth the coin.

Sacs is good quality and it comes with a factory Toyota throw out bearing. The pilot bearing is china but it seems to work well enough.

IF you choose to just get a pilot bearing. Schucks also has a Master Pro pilot bearing for 3.50 it's the same china one thats in the sacs clutch.

Personally I buy the Sacs clutch kit and get a pilot bearing from Toyota for 12 bucks.

Wow, is that clutch disc fried or what? I remember a tech that I used to work with had the end of his torx bit break off in the head of one of the bolts and didnt notice and it had this same noise.
