My 81 did the exact same thing, scares the s*** out of you but doesn't actually do anything. Mine was the rear brakes though and it was because my shoes were toast

peddle slips
How often does this happen? Any witness marks on the front calipers or inside of the wheels? Are both caliper to knuckle mounting bolts still there?

ill have to check the rears, but as far as the fronts go its all in good order, but ill have another look on my days off.
angrybob: this happens every day, but not everytime i brake. it dosnt seem to effect my braking power, but i can tell when it is going to happen, feels good then pressed halfway in it will slip maybe an inch, and at the same time it slips i will hear a clunk from the front... but i continue to stop fast?

alright, so i pulled the drums off and the pads were fairly low witch was making on of the pistons over extend!!!! there was a drip of oil and the rubber boot was off alittle!!!!!! ahhhh,
i guess the piston over extending was making the clunk??? and having a hard time going back to normal position?
do i have to replace the piston??

Makes sense that you still had good brakes since the drum brakes do very little
If there are any witness marks or damage to the piston at all, just go get a new wheel cylinder. They are cheap.
