bought a 90 pickup have a few questions

hey i just picked up a 90 ext cab pickup.its a 22re 5 speed. my 87's frame was getting soft and i got a good deal on this one.driving home i found in 4th and 5th gear mayby 3rd too u had to accelerate kind of slow or it would just rev up and not speed up. my 87 does something similar but its pushing big tires and its carbed. i was wondering if this is the way they are with these small motors or is there something wrong with it? also there seems to be a knocking or tapping noise in the motor. its there when its idleing or when ur off the gas but when on the gas driving it goes away and sometimes seems to go away when i hit the brakes. sounds like the top end. anyone have any ideas o what it is?

Revving up and not speeding up would make me think the clutch was toast...

agree with clutch

When a clutch starts to go out, it will slip in the higher gears first. Takes more force to hold the disc in 3, 4, and 5th than it does in 1st and 2nd. I would check it.

the ticking may be the timing chain guides or chain itself, but then again there are a lot of moving parts under there that could make those sounds

If the clutch is slipping, it's not going to last, it will just get worse.

The clutch is over...plan its replacement now. Routine valve adjustment usually makes noisy valves quieter, though you'll always hear that touch of 'sewing machine' from this motor.

Question

I would think the noise would be the timing chain, if not, maybe a wrist pin. You can adjust the valves, 0.008" intake and 0.012" exhaust (I am not going to give you the metric specs because I don't know them off the top of my head). It's a pretty easy job to do in the driveway IMHO. Best of luck with your new Toy.

whats a clutch cost for these? i think i'll drive my 87 till i get a clutch in this one. probably just get someone to check the motor when i get the clutch put in. i got a good deal on the truck so i dont mind putting some money into. i went down planning to pay $1500 for it and got it for $500.

Now that's a good deal. I'm thinking the clutch is about $150.00 US.

Google it: http://www.google.com/products?q=199...kit&hl=en&aq=f

Try this guy

Marlin Crawler has some pretty sweet heavy duty clutch kits that would work great with those oversized tires. Very resonable to! Just google it.

Order one on line I think you can find one cheaper if you are just going stock.

i also got a spare rearend with the truck but when i was looking at it today the rim center seemed bigger than the centers on the axle. so i measured it and the center of the axle thing that the center of the rim goes around was only 3.5 inches where is on my other trucks its 4 inches. anyone know what year this rearend would be from?

i was going over the truck again today and i'd say my motor noise is from the bottom end. was under it when its running and sounds alot louder underneth. i'll probably end up dropping another motor in it since i never did any bottom end work before.
