bought an 89 22RE to rebuild and replace my 86 re. Will it work?
I noticed there is some extra systems on the 1989 22re. Got a smokin deal, and was hoping I could rebuild and have a nice motor to swap into my 1986 4x4. It has a 22re currently. I was wondering what the differences are, and if there are differences, are they tough to over come? Block, head, exhaust, fuel inj/ intake look the same to me. Thank you for any help you can give. I would hate to tear into this and spend money on it, then find out it would not drop right in and be able to hook everything up without being a master mechanic, or very rich. Because a 22re would not be my first choice if I was rich!! haha

abecedarian put an 88 22r engine into my 91 22re truck and it works fine. he told me the head and block should the same from 85 to 95 but some 85s might have an 84 engine which may be different. he unbolted everything from the 22r engine so it was only the engine block and head, did something to the camshaft so the distributor worked, and bolted everything from the 91 to the engine and it runs awesome. so i dont see any problem going the other way using an newer engine in the older chassis as long as you remove everything from the new engine and bolt the older stuff to it.
if you want, you can PM me and ill give you abecedarian's email address and you can contact him directly.
