bottom end strength.

Hey guys, just purchased a long block 22r. Seller said crate long block from Toyota, with about 50k. Did leak down, exhaust valves all losing over 50%, could not do compression test as the motor is on a stand, and I have no way to turn it over fast.
Pulled the head, as I am buying a new Pro head and 261 C cam from engbldr. Here is my question.
The short block of this motor is very impressive. Cylinders look perfect, rods and mains are hardly worn, just barely discolored. Journals like glass, all spec out perfect. As I could not do a compression check, and the exhaust valves were leaking real bad, I am not positive about the rings, but am assuming they are in same condition as the rest of the bottom end. Should I hone and re ring, just hone without re ring, or just leave it alone and put the new head on.

This motor will be running Thorley header, modified intake, 3 inch high rise, with Weber Outlaw 38. Removed Cat, 3 inch exhaust, Flowmaster muffler.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

you will lose power with a 3 inch exhaust.


Carb may be too big.


You have it this far apart...if you cant do a compression test....then you could end up wasting a ton of time.

Hone and re-ring while its apart.

Might as well.....imagine the suck if you got it together and it had a broken or worn ring. Be bad.

Ditto. You could at lease take the pistons out and inspect the rings if nothing else.

thanks for that advise,, was thinking the same. Have heard alot about moly rings not sealing well. Any advise on best rings, and hone procedure. Will be using a 95mm flex hone. There is little to no ridge on the cylinders, so should I just de-glaze, or get a real good hone with cross hatch.
