Body Rust

I have rust on the top of the rear fenders (both sides) that extends up about two inches... The rust has gone straight through as well. I don't have pictures... but can anyone guess how much I'd be to fix?

I had the same problem on my 86 1st gen 4runner. I really didn't have the money to fix it or the skill to do it myself right. So I came up with an idea that I had used on my 76 cj 5 trail rig. I went and got a large sheet of aluminm and a pop rivit gun. Hold on don't blast me just yet... 1.First I cut out all the rust with a grinder. 2. Next I used POR-15 on and around the cut parts. 3.I then cut the aluminum the best I could and shaped it to replace the fender. 4. I used aluminum pop rivits to attach the plates. 5. I saned and coted those area with POR-15 again. 6. I taped off around the fender wells and across the bottom of the doors with painters tape. 7.I scuffed and sanded that area. 8.I bought the Huculiner bed liner roll on kit and coated the tapped off area with 3 coats. Basically thats all I did ...of course let it dry and peel off the tape. Anyway I've got nothing but compliments on the truck now and it you can't even see the pop rivits or plates....well one side you can barely se it but It does look sweet. If anybody wants to see picks I'll post em up... If not thats cool too.

One way I'm fixing mine is with cut out fender flares for bushwacker. The other way is to cut out the rust with grinder or wire wheel, and then I just filled in the stop with bondo because it was a cheep fix.

you should be able to cut/grind it out, and if its not too bad use body filler. otherwise you have to use something behind the body filler to give it support. I recomend some of the more expensive body fillers, as bondo tends to be pretty low in quality.

It should also be noted that after cutting/grinding out the rust you'll want to paint the bare metal with something to rustproof it. por-15 is well regarded, but pretty expensive. You'll also want to get primer and paint over the body filler pretty quick as body filler tends to suck up water, which will bring your rust problem right back.

Slacker, I like that link you posted although I'd need the full quarter panel that they offer but it's not that much more. So how would this be installed? I'm sure I'm going to have to get someone else to do it... How much would I be charged? can anyone here give me an estimate? I can drive to someone in the southeast.

cut and weld ... thing is , its more to ship then just the smaller pieces , unless its cut down , and then re welded up . shipping is always an issue .

you need to post up some pics ..

Talking

Just got a set of Bushwacker cut out fender flares for my '88 runner on ebay for $262 shipped. I've got the same rust problem especially on the passenger quarter panel. I'm going to take some before and after pics after I get the job done. They say it's going to snow tonight here in northern Idaho, 4 Runners rule in snow!!!!

oh yeah I'm sure that shipping is a deal- but it's either this or go to the junk yard and cut off the needed pieces and such... but I still need a welder- no way am I ready for that kind of task. I am already certain that this is going to be a two stage task just because I can't blow a crap load of money on it at once. First stage is replacing the panals next stage is a full paint job- but I really don't care about quality there I'm just gonna go to maeco or something and get the 500 dollar specail. I'm just gonna scratch it up on the trail anyways. Just want it red again- not this sunbleached redish almost dark pink.
