Blue smoke

I have a 1995 4runner that lost oil pressure and emitted blue smoke. The leak is on the drivers side of the engine above the oil filter. Before I start to tear it apart, can anyone tell me what I may be looking for? Is there some kind of external oil line? HELP please.

Thanks

Poorman

I think a blown head gasket would present itself as white smoke from the coolant. Blue would be oil...

Well This might be stupid, but could the oil filter have loosed it self and start leaking?

That's a possibility, there's also an oil cooler just behind the filter that is known for leaks, and in front of the filter is the oil pressure sending unit. Did you lose any oil, or did the pressure just drop.

blue smoke out the tailpipe is internal oil consumption, not from a leak. it still could be a headgasket, most likely not, but it is possible the gasket blew out by one of the cylinder head drain holes, and is allowing oil thats trying to drain into the pan into the cylinder. can you describe any other symptoms? did it make any noises when this happend? can you still start it up? if so, any noises? how much smoke(puffs or clouds?)
