Your engine is running rich...too much fuel and/or not being burned efficiently. It could be a number of things, though. Do a search. There are lots of threads about black smoke.

clear the grime off the float window on the front of the carb and look where the fuel level is sitting when you start it up.
If you cant see a line then theres to much fuel in the carb. This could be a lot of different things going on inside the carb that could cause this however the prime suspects are the floats themselves somehow not floating (heh) or a power piston or power valve sticking. Lots of things.
Least you can do is take the carb off and clean it out as best as you possibly can with forced air and carb cleaner and throw on a new fuel filter and air filter make sure the air filter is sealing top and bottom.
We're fighting the carb on our 87 with 212k miles. I rebuilt it but gunk from either dust or the fuel tank has been making its way into the carb and clogging things.
The only part I wasnt able to get apart was the jet/valve (whatever its called) that the float needle pushes up into. The screen in there could be damaged or deteriorating.
Anyways, black smoke means to much fuel not enough air.

i took it apart yesterday, and used about a can of carb cleaner, and all last night it was running great. This morning i start it up, and it has black smoke again.
i havea question as well, when you look at the top of the carb it has the 2 holes, are the lids open all the way on yours? on mine the passenger side one is open, the driver side is almost closed. would it be safe to mess with that?

well i dont really mind the smoke itself, just the fact that its sucking gas really fast. i was checking the manual earlier, and it said theres a hose to pinch it when the truck is warm till it dies, then start it up and see if it sprays gas?
does this really tell if i need to replace the aap diaphram?

A few months ago I had my carb rebuilt. It ran great for awhile and after I have moved away from the local "Carb Shop" it is now idling rough and has black smoke. I called the "Carb Shop" and he told me that the AAP may have gone bad, already? I thought. He explained today's fuels can do it and how this is the most common problem. He had me pull the vacuum hose from the AAP and see if it was sucking gas in and if so plug it off. I did and it was sucking in fuel but it did not stop the rough idle but it did stop the black smoke. I did not know if I needed to plug off wear the gas was coming from nor did I have the means at the time- Would this fix the idle problem, I wouldn't think so but I'm not sure. If anyone has any helpful suggestions I'm all ears. Thank you.
