I would just like to say thank you to all the yotatech members as i have just got done replacing my head gasket today . I only had to use superbleeder's thread once(power steering vacuum routing) but i will probably also steal his idea of moving the vsv's since i have deleted my egr and secondary air injection and PAIR valve as well. The only problem i have is that it clicks pretty noticably. even though i asjusted the valve clearance cold and while the motor was hot, and the head is a brand new engnblder with brand new oversize valves but it is still the stock cam. Any thoughts on the problem would be appreciated.

 

You need to adjust the valves with the engine hot, if you do it while the engine is cold, the valves expand a little when there hot so they will be to tight, so you need to readjust the valves or you stand a chance of damaging something.

 

I did do it when it was hot. The only adjustment to the valve is the valve lash .008 intake .012 exhaust right?

I did just read a couple threads down i may have my valve cover torqued down too tight and rocker arms hitting the cover, i'll try loosening it up tomorrow. Thanks.

 

Some folks go with .007 and .011 with good results. <<<me!>>> (As well as others. Search valve adjustment/22re)

 

I see a mod changed the thread title, thank you, but the word still doesn't really come into play as my valves weren't clicking this loud before the headgasket.

 

I went with 7 and 11, but I was also running an engnbldr cam, and mine was pretty silent, much to my surprise. considering every other rebuilt 22re I've seen has had valve chatter...

adjust at .007 and .011 COLD and it will be perfect everytimee.

 

Just remember, loud valves are safe as too much valve lash isn't usually a problem. Too little lash is quiet, but you can burn a valve. Exhaust valve are cooled by making contact with the cooled cyl head. The larger the valve lash, the longer the valves touch the cyl head and the cooler the valves run. Too little lash, and the valves heat up and crack.

Warm up the engine and set them HOT. I've used feeler gauges and that's worked fine as long as I could fit the feeler gauge in cleanly (ie: the feeler gauge was twisted to get around some awkward placement of some hose or emissions component). I used a dial indicator on my the 2H diesel in my Landcruiser and I was able to dial the valves in exactly and its noticebly quieter. The specs say 0.008 an 0.014". One of my exhaust valves was at 0.018 and I can tell you that 0.004" was noticeably loud, even on a big pushrod diesel.

 

Well i don't think i will have as much of a problem with burned valves because i have an engnbldr street/rv head with 1mm oversize valve on both ends. I also plan on putting the PAIR valve and secondary air back on after a trip to the junkyard this weekend.

Well the problem is i already set my valves, cold and hot. Next i'm going to try playing with the gap, making it smaller/bigger, checking rocker arm oiling holes to make sure i didn't block them when i cleaned everything, and trying to adjust the timing chain tensioner. I will be up your way the weekend of october 11th, if i don't have something figured out by then i'll let you know maybe we could get together.

BTW, I don't think I like the title of the thread, the way some of these new guys are going, it sound's a little sarcastic like thanks to yotatech, my valve now tick. haha.

 

I agree with this also still has a little tap at idle but that is normal.
