I am about to throw in a new pcv valve in my 4runner and it got me thinking...

What are some other really cheap fixes that can do wonders for a high mileage engine?

 

Although it's a PITA the fuel filter is a good one. Cleaning the throttle body is also an easy one just make sure and remove the TPS when doing so.

 

A general tune up cant hurt either. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor.

I noticed a better idle and more throttal response when I replaced my spark plugs and wires with NGKs.

yes...seafoam...i havent done mine yet, just kind of afraid to since i have a small leak, nothing major...just thing it might make it worse

And yes clean out the throttle body, i did and i noticed it was alot smoother feeling.

Not "cheap" really, but a direct fit Magnaflow cat can be a big improvement if the existing one is partly clogged.

Check resistance on both circuits of the coil; I checked it on my 89 a couple years ago and it was out of range; replaced with a Beck/Arnley from rockauto ($45) and it starts quicker and idles more smoothly.

Knocking the dust out of the EGR modulator filter isn't a bad idea - that's free.

And x2 on the tune up, throttle body cleaning, seafoaming & fuel filter replacement. Dropping a bottle of Red Line SI-1 Complete Fuel System Cleaner or CRC Guaranteed to Pass Emissions Test Formula in the tank is also a good idea - seafoam doesn't do much for injectors, nor does most injector cleaner. The two mentioned appear to be the only two remaining that still contain PEA.

Especially note the comment in the above post on pulling the differential breather and making sure it isn't clogged - that can help prevent axle seal failure, which can prevent leaking gear oil from washing the grease out of the wheel bearings, which can prevent a big pain in the nether regions.
