Well my 4runner came with a knock so I dropped the oil pan today and took off the number 4 rod bearing where the noise was coming from.

I would say it's bad, but it was a pita to get those bolts off with the motor in. Should I check the rest or just replace this one?

 

You already have it a part this far, might as well do all of them, if that ones bad then chances are the rest of them arn`t much better.

 

Yeah I went ahead and pulled the rest, 2 and 4 we're pretty bad so they're all going to get replaced. So i'll call the Toyota dealership up tomorrow and order them.

Getting the top bearings out is going to be a pita though

 

Does anyone know how i identify if i need bearing a, b or c?

 

What does the crank look like under those bearings? New bearings to a rough crank aint gonna help you much.......Regards.......Rick

 

if your crank bearings are ending their life, i'd wonder what else is close to doing the same thing. For example, if it was an oil delivery issue or dirty oil or something exploded into the oil(metal pieces) then that problem gets sent all over the motor. I'd look real closely at the rest of your motor. You'll be sorry if you have to do something like pull your pan twice

I'd pull a main cap or two and see what they look like

 

I just bought the truck and 30k miles ago the timing chain cover wore through and that had to all be fixed, the guy payed $1700 to get it fixed and had the receipts (might as well of bought a new motor.) It has 158k now and The crank looks fine, and so do the crank bearings. There were no signs of metal shavings in the oil or anything but the rod bearings were bad. So I ordered some rod bearings from the toyota dealership today (AACC) and they'll be here soon. I'll put them in and plasti gage it. Hopefully this will fix it long term, if not I'm prepared to just rebuild the motor.

 

Well I didn't pay attention when I took off the rod caps. Do the letters face the drivers side or passengers side?

 

there's markers on them; they face the front of the motor

The timing chain guides were just replaced 30k miles ago by a shop. I looked up in there and I could see the drivers side timing guides clearly intact but couldn't see the passenger side. Do you think maybe the shop left these in the oil pan?

 

well, lol, look at what I found in my oil pan during my rebuild






and what was left of that driver's side guide...




and you gotta watch it, cause the chain will eat right through the cover





It is possible that whoever did the work didn't bother to pull the junk out; it's a pain just to pull the oil pan to get to, having to either lift the motor, or drop the fron diff and all, lol, so they could have just got lazy
