Parting out a 90 4x4 3.0 auto pickup and the axle code is G254. I looked it up to find it has G=8" true. And "25 = 4.556 31" tire option". And 4 pinions. The truck has 31's but the sticker by the door says 225/75r/15. Doesn't that mean the truck came with stock 225/75's? The axle code said those gears had 31's?

My 94 4x4 v6 pickup has a G284 code with the R150F trans. It also has 225/75/15 printed on the sticker. I didnt like the way the truck looked and my speedo was a little off, so i put 31's on it and the speedo is dead on now. The 28 axle code says "28 = 4.300 AT, 225/75" But my truck is a stick, and the code says that 4.30's are autos? I don't understand...

Could someone please help me out?
I would like to figure out what gears and factory tire sizes my trucks came with.

why are you trying to figure out what gears and stock tires are in them.

the 4:56 and the 4:30 are both stock in the auto trannys

 

v6 autos usually came with 4.88's, cant speak for the stick though.

just FYI,

toyota axle codes are not always 100% accurate...(ask me how I know)

Make sure you PHYSICALLY confirm the ratio before u sell or buy another diff

 

I am parting out the 1990 automatic 4x4 3.0 and I want to be able to tell buyers what gear ratios it has. Since i'm looking up this info already, i am just curious on what gears my DD (94 4x4 v6 manual) has. The code doesn't make much sense. I am already using Toyota.off-road.com. It is saying my 90 auto has 4.56 w/ 31's and my 94 stick has 4.30 a/t 225/75...but it is not an auto, it's a stick. And both trucks have 225/75/15 printed on the info sticker in the door jam. I'm confused, does anyone have an idea...don't want to turn and count outside under the truck...but i might have too Thanks, Brian

 

u still need to physically count the rotations before you sell them (for your own protection) ..like I said...the codes are not always accurate

 

Not in 1990. The 4.88 option wasn't available then.

 

the 4.30 was the auto gear ratio in the late 80's i thought ....

 

x2, they are not always accurate. Do the lifted spinning tire method, it takes all but 10 mins and is the easiest way to 100% conferm what ratio you have.

 

I would trust the the axle code on 89-and up trucks. The gear ratio not matching the code was a problem with older trucks.

Also if the truck CAME with 31" tires the code plate WILL STILL READ 225/75.

4.30 gears were NEVER used on 31" tire trucks. How do you check your speedomemter? GPS?

 

This is a good thread topic. I myself have been pretty confused also. The Nissan truck axle codes were much easier to read.

 

wrong.......I have seen mis-marked Taco and 3rd gen runner diffs too

 

I remember seeing a tacoma that literally had "?????" as the axle code lol. Good ol high quality american enginuity there.

 

In this thread a couple people mentioned that there is a way to physically confirm gear ratios. is there another thread that explains how to do this? can somebody do a quick writeup on this subject.

 

I think almost every Toyota truck came with the 225/75/15 tire sticker in the door jamb, so that is probably the least reliable predictor of what size tire actually came on the truck.
