On the V6, testing the TPS is a real chore because of the orientation of the connector. By using the transmission diagnostics, you not only verify the TPS operation, but also that it is communicating correctly with the computer.

Note you can use that same terminal while driving to read out which gear you are actually in, and whether the lock-up is on.
