I think manual hubs and a electric fan will help. I have the efan in mind for my truck as well. Also want to do the synthetic oil in the drivetrain too.

I'm currently getting ~24 MPG in a '86 sr5 ext cab 22RE 5 spd w/ 235/75r15 and 4.10's.

I just got some aluminum wheels - hope the lighter rotating mass helps.
I use the rack enough to keep it on full time. If I can rally some funds soon, this is my list of fun to do to the toylet:
E-Fan
Manual hubs
Custom long tube header and exhaust with new cat and higher flow muffler
engbldr head with the big valves and a crawler cam (I need the power to come on sooner the RV cam or whatever I got when I rebuilt the motor brings the power on too late for my tastes)
Fix the oil leak on the pan or rear main, which ever one it was that I ˟˟˟˟ up at the rebuild
Megasquirt computer with MAP sensor
Wide band O2 sensor
Re-do my "cold air" intake.

I don't know if I will see huge gains in MPG from this, but I kinda want to see how far I can push it power wise with ye ol 22RE. Especially since we will be parting with the subaru to get a suburban. I am gonna need something with a little get up and go to fill my lead footed needs. At least until the mustang is done.

I've read on ecomodder forums that the best gains in MPG are easiest achieved by "adjusting the nut behind the wheel!"

here is a link to an interesting gamut of high mileage rides: ecomodder
