Attempting 25MPG w/ my 22RE

1994 4runner 22RE 5spd w 4.10s
35x12.50s w BJ/cruiser lift.

mods
hi flow cat, full 2.5" exhaust (2.5 pipe was free)
Supra AFM with 3" intake pipe, AEM cone filter
plugged PAIR (just to make the swap easy)
NGK plugs

the goal: 25MPG

I drive 110miles RT to work. 10mi of 35MPH, then 20mi 55MPH hiw, then 80mi 60MPH fwy. 3 stop lights the way there.

how

I inflated my tires to 50psi, max sidewall rating

adjusted the supra afm.. lean 4 clicks (was running rich at stock). no pinging so far, will try 6 next fillup

drive max speed 62mph.

take on/off ramps at 50+mph if they aren't to tight.

coast hills

so far I am at 22MPG. I have been going to fast, so I need to keep to 60. I like cruising 68mph.

Ill update next fillup.

Manual hubs made a decent improvement for me, 2 to 3 mpg which i wasn't expecting at all. Haha and now that its been puzzling me for a year or so I'm not sure if my axle was disconnecting before so that could be why. At 110 miles tho it would probably be cost effective for you too buy a set of 31 in street tires to run on the road, good luck.

dang, that's a lot of miles to commute every day in a 4runner with a 22re, 35" tires, and stock gears. surprised you actually get over 20mpg with that setup, but then again i'm sure your rpm's are super low on the hwy, but with no passing power. i have gotten 27mpg once on the hwy, but i've got a pickup (which is lighter) and was running 4.10/31" AT tires, and a bottle of injector cleaner on winter gas.

i looked in your build thread and saw that your 35s are brand new, so my personal suggestion would be to change your gears/tire ratio. a little bit lower gears in the diffs should help your 22re to not work so hard at getting those heavy tires to move. i would guess some 4.88s instead of 5.29s would be good since you'll have more power for the low-speed stuff, but still keep somewhat low RPMs on the hwy since you do so much commuting. if you did more in-town driving or a lot more wheeling, then 5.29s would probably be better.

i also saw in your build thread that you've got some nice 17" wheels and got the center caps to fit on there...well i'm assuming that since you've got them on the front, that you've still got ADD. my suggestion would be to install some manual hubs and disconnect that front diff from turning while you're driving = less friction = more MPGs and less maintenance.

yes, I agree on the hubs and gears. I keep looking at the pull yards for some hubs and 4.56s or 4.88s, just hasn't happened yet. as soon as I find some Ill throw them in.
the 4.10s actually do fine. I have to hit 4th gear or 3rd to pass, but at 60mph I cruise at about 2300rpm. below 55 and it starts to lug, so I hit 4th. my 85 had 5.29s and I had great power, but 18-20mpg tops.
I only wheel snow, so I don't need a real low gear.

I had 265/75s for commuting, they looked retarded

Nice!

Thought about adding a header to match up to your intake? May help with passing/power/MPG?

electric fan,
manual hubs,
take off the a/c compressor belt(if equipt),
install vacuum gauge to really watch when/where your buring fuel,
have clean power to your plugs(good beefy grounds, more grounds...etc)
header
etc...

Good advice here. I've got the Supra mod on mine as well as an LCE header, helped a lot more than I thought it would.

Some things I could add....

Synthetic gear oil in the engine/tranny/t-case/diffs. (might help a little)
Run a snorkel like BBP did to get cold air to the intake, I still need to do this.

Indeed, supra AFM does help a little.

Maybe not a snorkel persay, but intake swap definately and box it off like Kiyobrown did so that it'll pull air in from behind the headlight area there and not so much from the engine bay.

Idk. I've had good results by holding my skinny pedal steady up hills. Rather than floor it.

I would start to roll down the hills backwards if I didn't put the pedal to the floor
