ATF in the transfer case.?

The Haynes manual suggests that I use Dexron II ATF in the transfer case in my 95 4Runner manual transfer case..? When I changed the fluid...nothing red came out..just good ole 75/90 gear oil..could tell by the smell..what do you guys recommend?
