Too many low-mid mile trucks up here (OH, MI, IN) with bad frames. This decision should be easy one. Make the trip or ship, keep your downtime to a minimum.

BTW i seen some rust prevention but no real oil- leaks on your pics. You may be surprised how low long that 22RE lasts.

I just took a look at the 3.4 swap 101 thread and all of that is 1000x out of my league.

if you're tranny problems are anything like mine(they sound exactly the same). Expect to lose 3rd gear very soon. i lost mine a few weeks ago and had to buy another used tranny that will hopefully last till summer when i rebuild the 22re. oh and BTW, i like the idea of starting a poll, i might have to start one of my own.

When it first started happening I lost 3rd, but then it came back and I've been able to use it since. It grinds a little even with the clutch fully depressed going into gear but it goes in.

The most annoying part is that I have to hold the stick in 1st and 3rd.

Rebuild the 22re or replace it with a used motor/rebuilt unit.

The 3.4 swap is most likely out of your league (no offense). Not to mention you don't have a place to work seeing as you're living in an apt.

Just my .02

Still voted for bacon.

The 3.4 swap or any engine swap is really a pretty time consuming deal. Plan on 4x the money and time than you set out to spend. (ask me how I know lol). if you are considering a swap you might also look into the diesel route. Since you have a 22re you can get a 4x4 labs kit to adapt your transmission to a Mercedes Diesel (om617) and they can be had for very cheap on craigslist. IMO with the 4x4 labs kit the diesel is much simpler than the 3.4 as there is little to no wiring involved. Check the diesel swap board sometime there are a few of us on there right now doing swaps. If a swap is out though definitely do the long block route.

I'm sure it is out of my league. What would be best is if I could find someone with experience to either pay to do it all or work with me to do the swap.

We'll likely have a house by the time I'm ready to do either one.

Depending on what it costs for donor and parts you could do it for that.

Red 89 we just finished he had less than $4k in his whole truck but got some deals by searching.

Well that's good to know. I figured taking some time and getting the right deals would help control costs. Which is why I'm thinking about it well in advance.
