WASHINGTON (AP) - Congressional officials say the government suspended the popular "cash for clunkers" program amid concerns it could quickly use up the $1 billion in rebates for new car purchases.

The Transportation Department called congressional offices late Thursday to alert them to the decision to halt the program, which offered owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.

Through late Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased through the program and nearly $96 million had been spent. But dealers raised concerns of large backlogs in the system, prompting the suspension.

Congressional officials say that the government suspended the program at midnight. There are concerns it could quickly run out of cash for rebates on new fuel-efficient cars.
Wow, makes the government look even more stupid and irresponsible.

New Taco

A guy I work with traded in his 1986 S-10 with V-6 for a new 4wd Taco, after 7 hours of paperwork he got the full $4500 off the price!! Its a really nice little truck... Its a 4cyl, 5 speed with AC and all, I think he financed something like $13,000 for a brand new ride!

hmmmm 13,000 dollars he does not have and will have to make payment on for the next 4-5 years with what 13% intrest? not a good deal even if he did get a yota. this crap makes me sick.

oh yeah and the s10 will now be cruched for no reason and parts for that vehicle will go up costing people more. CFC was a mistake - oh did i mention, you helped pay for his truck... think the gov just had all the money for CFC just laying around? nah we pay for it in taxes - kinda like welfare!!! tell ur buddy i want to schedule my day to drive his truck for next week since inevitably we all helped pay for it.

The worst part of the CFC scam is they destroy everything on the old cars. You can't get a damn thing from them, they destroy the motor and then crush it....

Talk about added waste. This whole going green is a load of crock. I wonder how much you would have to drive your old car to offset the massive amount of pollution it took to make and ship that new car to you and shipping/crushing your old car. Probibly quite a few years...

With Toyota trucks costing upwards of $20K; $4500 off is not that great of a deal. I heard on the local news last night that you have to sign a waiver; if the government doesn't come through with the money, you have to make up the difference or give the vehicle back. One of the local Portland, OR dealers said the government owed them $1.5 million; they were a little worried about getting it.
