Not to be a serious pain, but I'd have a much much better chance if the picture was less blurry. If you just want to take a closeup of the block and wires that's fine. The rest of the gauge looks stock.

I know. I can't see it very well either. That picture was emailed to me. I've seen pictures of other clusters but I've never seen that before. I'm just wondering if it's an option available on that particular truck or something. He said it came out of a 95 4Runner. I'll see if I can get him to send me a better picture.

Try reading thru here, somewhere in there, I swear I saw a shot of one of those. Sorry I'm not more help! But I read thru there before my swap, think I saw it then.

Looks like three wires total. I wish I had one here, but I'd guess it's some kind of bolt on fix they had to do for some signal. I'm guessing at the wire colors here but it looks like solid black, orange and black, and yellow and black (maybe yellow/brown?). If so, my best guess is that it's a noise filter removing ignition (black wire for the tach) from whatever the yellow and ??? wire is. Maybe fuel, maybe something else. You see those nice premade cases frequently with noise filters and I know the ignition system already has noise filters on it.
Best guess

Yep, that makes sense. Looking at the guts of the tach, it could be Toyota found it was a little sensitive to "noise", and made a fix. (Never expecting folks to do cluster swaps)

I've been trying to figure this out and I've come across some people who are asking the same question about theirs. All I've been able to come up with is it seems to be used in rigs that are a later model (mid 90s or so) and have a V6/automatic setup. It's located moreso behind the tach so maybe it's something to do with keeping the tach from bottoming out in the middle of a shift........I don't know. I'm going to keep looking.

You know, another thing I just realized looking at the pics… that's not a Truck/4Runner cluster.
Toyota, yeah, but the Trucks/4Runners only have 3 plugs, not 4. At least not the 84-89 years. I haven't seen the later ones, but the shape still looks wrong.
