Any one know what this wire is for?

this wire has been hanging out the bottom of my truck for a while. any ideas what its for? Its on a 1990 3v6, coming out of something under the sump. the connection has broken off on the other end looks like it connects to a cable thats hanging down behind the alternator.

i just saw a thread that showed the long shaft that bolt to the diff that has the add actuator built on to it removed. does this mean that i can take the two diffs, one that iss add and one that isnt, and make a good non add diff by bolting his lonf shaft onto my diff?
