Exclamation Help please - always in 4wd

so i recently bought a 93 4runner 4WD, and i had to do a tranny swap, but after i did and ran it on a lift it seemed to be stuck in 4WD all tires spun, toook off the front driveshaft and it was still spinning from the transfer case. i was told however on this year of 4runner that the front driveshaft turns continuously, and info or help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Did you check your linkages to make sure they are set correctly. Make sure the transfercase was shifted to 2H and not 4H or 4L? Not trying to point out the obvious but you got to start some where.

yea i have checked all of that, everything is set right and im set in 2H, but its still spinning at the transfer case, i was told that this year the front driveshaft always turns even in 2H.

I have not heard that, and was looking thru the Service manuel and could not find anything. I will look some more tomorrow and hopefully find something to help you.

does it have manual hubs or is it ADD? if its ADD then its suppose to aways spin

it has the automatic hubs, so that means the front driveshaft is always spinning?

im 90% sure it does, i know jeeps are that way at least with ADD

when you put in in 4wd all you're doing is in a sense locking the front hubs

you are Right skiiiier dude...BUT he said he was on a LIFT....

meaning all tires in the air...which means only the REAR tires (or tire....lol) should spin.

now if he was rollin down the highway..then yes with A.D.D. the front end components and driveshaft will spin..(this is eliminated with Manual hub conversion..simple bolt on matter.)

i say take your T-case shifter out and make sure everything is where it needs to be...sounds like it's just in there wrong...

maybe like the shifter was removed while in 4wd..and put back in with the shifter in the 2wd position?....maybe...idk if it's possible or not..just a suggestion.

Auto is the H transfer case...

It's all one unit...

Goog "Pirate A340 FAQ" and read up on it.

Is there a body lift on this truck?

Bone stock, no lift?

Semi...

A broke ADD will do one of two things... Break in 4WD or in 2WD. Strike that, will break with the diff locked or unlocked.

And since the hubs don't unlock, the half shafts are what's always spinning. Not the front shaft.


When the ADD slides the collar over the axle it's exactly like locking the hubs on a manual hub'd truck.

When it won't, the CV half shaft will turn the case of the diff and the spiders will rotate inside.

An unlocked ADD will not turn the front shaft going down the road.

This is the same system, only a Dodge and the diff's on the wrong side...

hey tried4x2, im still confused with what your saying, im pretty mechanically smart but all the 4WD stuff is new to me, could you explain in simpler terms?

Yeah, it's not written the best way... And it's more to the perspective of replying to Camo.

On a more traditional 4WD, there are only two ways you can be "always in 4WD"

Either the hubs can be locked, causing the the front diff and shaft to rotate.

Or the shifter itself is in 4WD and spinning the front diff up to the unlocked hubs.

Look at the diagram in my post. Look at the "shift actuator" and "shift collar and fork"

IF, you are locked at that junction, then your front driveshaft will rotate. Even in H2.

The actuator could have failed by the diaphragm blowing, or it's jammed...

The other way the shaft will turn is from the transmission.

You have the model of transmission that the transfer case is connected, and even shares function by the transmission.

Nothing you can do about it... Google "Pirate A340 FAQ" to find out more.

Here's ANOTHER reason to ditch ADD.

It's almost impossible to troubleshoot.

EDIT: On a real 4x4, you can lock and un lock the hubs, and shift the TC from 2H to 4H and test the complete 4WD system, TC and diffs, without the engine even running!

This tells me you don't have messed up tranny/TC linkage a body lift might have messed up.

alright so i figured that it is the front hubs that are stuck in the locked position. but i cant afford to do a switch to manual hubs right now. so do i basically take off the actuator cap and check the sleeve in there and push it back to the unlocked position or is there another way?

You should be able to do that, if it is a vacuum problem they might just reengage again. OEM hubs can be had here quite often. Wabfab offroad can get you good hubs and he does a good job at rebuilding them back to new condition. He can be found on here as waskilywabbit.

I have seen used ones not recondition go from $50 upto $100 a set.

Check the classified section and in the search field in the upper right had corner just type "manuel hubs".

Alright so i have asked and called around, are my hubs supposed to always be locked with the ADD system or are they supposed to unlock? should i be able to spin the front drive shaft when the truck is in 2H and sitting on the ground?
