Besides me?

I had a 7m AFM and an extra 3.0 AFM sitting on the bench too long and well you can see what happend.

So I thought I would post some pics to get you people thinking (this means you Bumpin)

I ran it around the block a few times (maybe up to 60mph in 3rd gear) and it seems to be working just fine. I will need to do some more tuning and tweaking but I would say its very promising. In my quick little 4 min test drive its safe to say you can feel the additional air flow on the top end.

Excellent!

You dont have any pinging? And you just swapped out the trace boards from one to the other? Or are you playing with the rich/lean settings?

Oh and have you had to set it so rediculously lean that the vane will just hang open by about 1/2"? These werethe problems that I was encoutnering...so now im looking at the split second tuner that Gadget pushes - should be compatable with both vafms and mafs....

Like I said I have only had it on for a few Min's to get it set and run it around the block a few times. I need to check the voltage at idle w my stock un violated AFM and set the new one to the same at idle. My next step after that will be to run leads from my VOM into the engine compartment and measure the stock afm under certain conditions then replace with the hybrid and check the same conditions.

When I was playing around with the 7m afm in its stock condition I was able to get a good steady idle but I noticed that the voltage rise during any acceleration was very fast compared to the much longer and gradual 3.0 afm hence the board swap. the spring rates seem very similar between the two so with that in mind I should be able to get a working unit with a little tinkering and if i need to adjust resistance on the board should be able to add some parallel resistors beside the SMT stuff (crosses fingers). I guess its all about position and getting the wiper to board position matched up between the two for like conditions.

Its been so long since I worked on the project that I cant find the cover for the 7m afm but I will figure something out. My other problem is I need to make a cone filter adapter for the 7m afm so I can fully latch my hood. It will fit on the stock air box ok but it sticks up too high. I hope to be picking up a dynojet wideband O2 meter in the near future so that will eliminate any guess work. If I cant get it perfect then I will switch to a hot wire set up with an SMT6 but I thought I would give this a try since the cost is so low compared to the other option.

Edit... ohh and that 1st pic is with the truck at idle so you can see the position in relation to the stop.

well I took a few Min's to tweak with it until I got the idle voltage reading the same as the stock afm. I also took it out for a little spin and the good news is that it performs just like the stock afm but then again the bad news is "it performs just like the stock afm". Made a couple 60 mph pulls to the 5500 mark then lugged the crap out of it in taller gears to check for detonation and there is really nothing to report? no gain no loss

If I could get my hood to fully close with that big a$$ afm on top of my air box I would make some triple digit pulls and see how things are on top at full load but that will have to wait till I get a cone filter on it.

Once I get a wideband O2 meter I can see the real picture I guess. Any one local got one I can borrow???

What are you talking about. I run mine up to redline all the time. I did it before mods and I do it after, Neverhad a single problem & I have 230,000 miles on it. I regularily run it wide open at 5000-5500 on a hill in Cochrane that is an 8% grade going up with and with out the trailer on the back. Needless to say I don't think I have any carbon in the engine and it alrawys runs well.
