Well, my "new" '93 (and about a half of an '89) SR5 arrived on a flatbed today. It was a project truck that got passed around between owners for awhile, seeing progress, then sitting until the next owner bought it. I'm hoping to finally finish it. It has some issues, and I'm sure I'll be driving a few of you nuts with some seemingly stupid questions, so I apologize now.
The good:
-Most of the body has been replaced, so rust-free sheet metal
-So many spare parts! (two sets of wheels, spare transmission, almost an entire spare interior, etc.)
-Brand new transmission and clutch
-low mileage (80,500)
The bad:
-Rear drums are rusted tight. It still moves, but not well.
-Leaking fuel from a rusted in place fuel filter
-Some assembly required, as in the entire interior is in a pile in my garage. (My garage normally isn't that messy, everything from the snowblower back is truck parts)
Either way, it'll be fun bringing another Toyota back from the dead!
Keep us posted on your progress. As I just bought an '87 SR5, I will follow your thread to see if anything you find or do can apply to mine.
Will do. So far, all I’ve done is clean and try to sort out what I have and what’s missing. To solve the leaking fuel filter, the whole fuel line is getting replaced today. I’m also going to try to reroute the line a bit, because truck has (not sure of the brand) upgraded headers, and I don’t like how close the fuel line is.
Well, I promised dumb questions, here’s my first one. What is this guy taped up out of the way? It’s in the front passenger wheel well. There doesn’t seem to be one on the driver’s side.
I'm guessing you have a "fixed" antenna powering the radio now.
Don't lose it; pretty hard to replace.
Thanks man! I have an empty hole in the fender right now. Now I feel a lot less stupid. I haven’t unwrapped it yet, but had no clue what that was. Never would’ve guessed I’d find an antenna in a wheel well.
EDIT: Go figure, just found two more of those in the spare parts pile!
Judging by the photos that thing is in nice shape! What's under it for suspension?
It’s “sort of” in nice shape. It was at one point. Unfortunately, it sat in a field for 5 years after the owner died, so I’m fighting a lot of irritating issues. Stripped the frame today and went POR-15 happy. It’s on a 2” Pro Comp suspension lift, and 3” body lift. The body lift is pretty funny. The front was done right, but the bed had 2X4’s “temporarily” serving as the spacers. Lol! Those went away yesterday as well. I’ll upload some of the funny pictures tomorrow when I get back to my computer. This thing needs a LOT of work, but it has a great base to work with.
I forgot to mention the cool part. The original guy who started the restoration ran out of money, then the next owner spent a fortune (but died, so that part’s not cool), then my friend bought it because all three of them had spent so much time working on it. He sold it to me. Both surviving previous owners loved this truck so much, I now have a small army working on it. They just want to see it finished. The beer budget is brutal though!
Looks pretty high for an IFS rig, how are the angles of the CV axles and driveshaft?
What size tires are those? Chances are you got your money's worth right there . Depending on your gearing it might be a bit of a dog pushing those wheels .

It’s my first Toyota truck, but coming from the Jeep world, the angles don’t look extreme. It’s on my list to look into, because my old Jeep ate U-joints before I got things right. The tires are virtually brand new Mickey Thompson 36 X 12.50 Baja Belteds. It came with six of them, all mounted on matching wheels. I basically bought the wheels and got a free truck.
On to the next problem. The new, more or less, OEM bumper arrived today. I just realized there’s extra frame welded on to accommodate the bigger leaf springs. No mounting holes. Time to figure out where to drill.
Time for my next dumb question. I’m currently lacking rear shocks. Any recommendations? My intended use is bouncing around sand dunes. My Jeep was built more for crawling, so slightly different application. It’s on a 2” suspension lift.
