Another one followed me home

I guess getting the lockers into my 2nd gen will have to wait.

This blue '88 runner followed me home. (on a carhauler)

Found the distributor drive broken and the cam sprocket dowel sheared.

Never seen a camshaft wiped like this one. All lobes wiped but several with near 1/8 inch gone. WOW!!!

There were fairly light indications that the intake valves kissed the piston tops when the timing let go. The aftermarket casting head is at the machine shop for bent valve inspection and freshening.

The pistons show 1mm oversize and the bores look good.

Gonna drop the front diff and pull the oil pan for cleaning and a look at the rod bearings since so much chaff from the camshaft has passed into the engine; not to mention finding the large missing chunk of the dist drive gear.

Truck has absolutely no rust and no previous body work.

The scrape at the driver taillight and a small dent at the driver door mirror mount are the worst of it.

I can't resist an orphan in distress.

I know the wife is gonna say three is too many to keep

Not out of the question if I stumble onto the right donor.

Yes the shift bezel fab is nice. I haven't really examined its construction yet.

It, and the dashpad, are both nicely covered with some sort of indoor-outdoor carpet, I think.

I'll post some pics of the bezels construction when I find some time.

lol... just remind her that you aren't spending the money drinking in some cross-town bar.

dang!! mods need to rename this the ugly camshaft thread!

i had to deal with flat cams on the old aircooled vw's, seeing it on these trucks makes me real nervous.

Well, technically, if you count the rolled over '92 runner out in the back, I'm already up to 4. I guess I'm doomed.

I guess when you figure the cost of getting, building up, and maintaining these rigs, so you can go out in the middle of nowhere and drink,

The cost probably approaches what drinking in the bar would cost. Better views and much safer out in the boonies though.

It's been my M.O. since I was a teenager. Some things never change.

Nice 4Runner. Saw 22RE cam lobe suffer same as yours but never pulled distributor to take a peak. It was the lobe nearest distributor that was worn and we had just replaced head with a reman 30 days previous. Any idea exactly how/what happens that causes this?

Waal... I been peckin at it. Timing cover and head went on today.

In-frame overhaul including new NPR pistons and rings, King rod and main bearings, valve grind, new cam and rocker arms, timing chain/gears, oil pump and timing cover.

Gonna do some soldering/wiring harness rehab and other general underhood chores.

Have about $700 in machine work to head, new engine parts n gaskets, not too bad.

Might get her running by new years, if I don't decide to go camping over Christmas.
