Another "gear" thread. . .
Ok, so I towed my car a couple times (car trailer), and am just not too happy with the performance of the stock gearing and 33's LOL.
What would you suggest (besides a new truck). Looking for something a bit more "tow" friendly.
Only do minimal highway driving, but don't want that to limit me at all.
I was thinking 4.88's would do alright, but is the next step up really better?
94 pickup sr5, v6, on 33's. If it helps, stock gears are 4.30's.
Thanks.

4.56 or 4.88s should help your torque, but if you're towing over the max of your truck you're going to rip up the gears in your transmission. if its only up hills, throw it in 4hi (unlocked front tho) tcase usually is like 3.25 or so. or down shift. but make sure you're not stressing your truck, new gear sets for the tranny are pricey. in the long run it might be cheaper to just get a bigger towing truck.

4.88s it is then. I mean it does the job, but more torque wouldent hurt. Car only weighs about 2800 plus trailer. If it becomes a huge issue, I'll look into another truck but don't really want to. This yota really proved itself with me lol.

also 33's are horrible to pull with, get a set of 'stock' street tires for towing lol.
you have to factor in the weight of your truck, its heavy tires, you and any passengers, anything in the bed, along with weight of the trailer before you load it, if its over the max of the truck, you're going to probably first snap an axle, engineers made that the weakest link in the drivetrain, because its the 'easiest' to swap out. so weigh your options before you just gear it, i'm all for gearing but its not going to change the over all capacity of the trucks capabilities. you'll still only have 1/2ton axles, and the same 19yr old gears in your transmission

Most definatly. I don't expect to pull no 0-60 in 8 seconds haha.
Just something to "help" with the pull. I understand the towing aspect and what it can and can't handle. I know it can handle it as I've done it numerous times. Just looking for some extra "umph".
I take an easy when towing, to prevent breaking anything. But I gotta make due with what I have lol.

empty my truck is lucky to go 0-60 in under 5 minutes... hahahaha
I trust you know how to tow, most people that own trailers usually know better than over stressing their trucks. yea 4.88s should give you that umph you're lookin for

On another note, if I were to decide to buy the gears, who exactly does the rebuilds on them? Would that be transmission shop, or what? Thanks.
