Considering what I'm doing - I've done a lot for $3,000. I've got a LOT of new parts. Magnaflow high flow cat, borla turbo muffler, performance intake, replacing a lot of electrical wiring, etc. And most of my parts are OEM Toyota or better. (thank you toyotapartszone.com and rockauto.com lol)

You'll have to go through the dealer to get the shims (at least my experience). If you take your measurements, you might be able to swap around the shims that you have in your motor right now to make clearances match. I did that on a friends 3VZ-E and it worked fine.

that is a good idea? now let me ask you something. when you did it, did you measure all the valves first then play around with the shims?.....I just started it taking it apart againg.

Yes - I had both valve covers off, measured all of the clearances, took the shims out to see which shims I had to work with and shuffled them around accordingly. It's not too hard to do - just time consuming. You have the shim chart, right?

Take your time - the valve adjustment is one thing you definatly DO NOT want to rush. If the clearances are wrong you could end up with a bent valve, or burned valve, or just lots of lifter noise.

ok a little update.....I checked my timing belt and it was off my one tooth, so I spend all day checking all the valve clearances and here they are.

I was wondering if there is a place to buy a shim kit online instead of buy one by one.

I don't recall there being a kit, just ordered individually from the dealer, or online.

There are 25 sizes of shims, and at $8 each from Toyota, it's better just to order the ones you need.

Wish I hadn't throw a bunch of those shims in the garbage pile a few months ago. I had 3 motors laying around and pulled parts off of them including shims to rebuild mine about 2 years ago. Thought I would not need them again. Oh well

I think I may have this issue. How much time is it to "re-torque" the head bolts. I will have to pay someone to do this so Im hoping its not a huge job to check.

I was also told however, that if you get the full HG repair kit it comes with new bolts and the re-torquing is not required. Anyone know about that?
