From what i remember, short block is bottom end only, long block is top and bottom. You use your accessories.

Typically it's set up like this:

Short Block:

Lower Block, Crankshaft, Connecting Rods, Pistons, Rings, Main Bearings, Rod Bearings, Cam Bearings, Camshaft and Timing Set occasionally.

Long Block:

Lower Block, Crankshaft, Connecting Rods, Pistons, Rings, Main Bearings, Rod Bearings, Cam Bearings, Camshaft and Timing Set, Lifters, Gaskets, Cylinder Heads, Valve Train, Oil pump and sump. You typically have to do the cleaning, rebuilding and reassembling of components like your oil pan, timing chain cover, valve covers, induction system, electronics, pulleys etc. back onto the engine.

It's much easier to buy a complete engine and just pull your old one out and drop the new one in. You are going to pay a little more, but it saves you time and frustration.
