Am I going crazy?
I just rebuilt my Aisin hubs. I was told they were IFS... but I'm starting to question that....
I have rebuilt them 2 times each... both times I followed this

No matter what I do the hubs will not allow the CV axle to freewheel.
It doesn't appear that I have the gaskets. Is the tolerance so tight that they will not disengage without the use of the gaskets?
Does anyone have any other ideas here?
Does anyone have a photo of the follower prawl from an IFS and a SFA? I'm trying to see if I have the SFA prawls in an IFS hub... can that even happen???

Its not the lack of gaskets.
Likely to be a problem with how the springs are seated that push and pull the locking collars in and out.
I think that SFA and IFS hub parts are all interchangeable except for the locking collars.
The locking collars have different internal spline counts because the outer drive axle stubs are splined differently on IFS and SFA.

I think millball is correct about the spline count. I am not sure however if the one with fewer splines (solid axle version) would somehow fit over the IFS setup just ao that you wouldnt notice. I think you would notice.
No offense, perhaps something is not put back as it should be? If you take pictures of the insides in sure the experienced people on here can spot whats not right.

I'm not an expert on this, but I did notice one thing which looked funny to me.
In this picture, it looks like the big spring is compressing into itself, shouldn't a proper working spring stack instead of one layer pushing into the other? Perhaps the springs are worn out/stretched.

I can't tell you just what's wrong, but those don't look right. The locking mechanism is sticking out too far from the mounting plate, I think. When it's in the "Free" position, everything should be tucked inside the mounting plate and the spring should not be showing at all. The way it is, there's no way the locking collar (the part with the splines) is going to slide back far enough to release from the hub.
I think you'll have to visit one of the web sites where someone shows how to overhaul these things and study just how they go together.

RJR, the spring tucking into itself would cause the outer ring to sit against the housing (as seen in the pic) and not allow the whole assembly to tuck into itself as you said.

I think you're probably right, Gevo. As I recall when I overhauled mine, there are a couple of ways to assemble that spring, and only one of them is the right way. If you do it wrong it doesn't allow things to go together all the way properly. I would guess the spring is in wrong somehow. or as you say, is mis-shapen.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the input. I removed the large spring and tried to mount it up to see if the spring itself was the issue. I'm still not able to freewheel. Which leads me to believe it is the follower prawl spring or the orientation of the follower prawl.
Anyone else have any ideas. I'm stumped.
