For all those frustrated 3.0 v6 owners

Wait, you've replaced 2 3.0's? You know what the definition of insanity is? Doing the exact same thing and expecting a different result.
I'm sure you've put 3.4 swap $ into it by now...

Gotcha. Swapping in a used is definitely the path of least resistance often times when one needs to running again quickly.
I hope we can get to see some dyno charts. It would put so many questions to rest.

Ok so Maybe I dont really know just how much horsepower my truck has I havent dynoed it yet so I really dont know. I can honestly say though that after all the mods the 4runner is a completely different animal. I know for a fact I can smoke my 33's through second gear and on a decent straight away It doesnt take a whole hell of alot to make it to 100mph. Theres alot of great products out there for the 3.0 v6 I know because I spent the money and ya it wasnt cheap lol. Anyway I remember a couple of questions some people had Im runnin 2.25" pipes for better backpressure I ran 2.5" for about a year and finally got that taken care of and it made a big difference. Also regarding the cams I talked to one of the guys at doa racing and he told me to advance the timing 15 degrees and gap my plugs to .40 to burn up a little more fuel. That also seemed to work nicely. The doa racing throttle body was one of the best products I got and proabably made the biggest difference in power aside from the headers. Also the electric fan made a substantial difference and really freed up a few more ponies than I had anticipated. The ignition was also another tip from the guys at doa racing and that seemed to make difference too. I plan on eventually porting the heads a little later on down the road which should be fun. Oh yeah as far as gas mileage goes, ya i get between 12-14 mpg which sux. It might be different for someone whos runnin the stock 4.10's but im runnin 4.88's. I really dont have the money for the dyno so as far as 190 horse goes who knows but the products are definitely worth the money!

Can you even do a 0-60? That will help. If you can find a way to quarter mile it we can extrapolate power from that figure.
That you can get rubber with 33's in second gear is very impressive.

there should be a sticky warning people to watch what they say about the 3.0L... everytime someone says they dont hate it the 3rd gen and 3.4L swap guys roll in. A George W. Bush style war could be fought over this subject.. do i have one?? yes.. do i thinks its stupid? for sure!!! am i going to waist my time telling you mines better then yours? no. ive got better things to do.. if he feels he spent his cash well.. awsome..

I would love to see some documentation to back this up. a friend of mine has a 3.slow and has done the head gaskets twice. once by dealer recall and once out of his own pocket. He drove my stock 3.4 and loved it. He has spent upwards of $2800 on upgrades (and repairs) including headers on just his motor and I would be surprised if he got 20 more horsepower. Although it is a lot more reliable now. I would still think SWAP. I am going to PM him and let him know about this thread and he will probbably PM you for some more info. I don't want to be a naysayer but please post some stats to back up your claim. Good luck with your 3.0!

my 3.0 gets nearly 20 mpg and thats mostly city. you all must have lead feet. it also has decent HP I raced a friend of mine at work who has a built honda 1.6 with cams bored .20 over and wide open exhaust(stupid btw if you like torque) and msd ignition and I kept right up with him up to 75 before I let off. I have a stock 3.0 essentially I put in a high flow air filter and redirected air flow and opened the VAFM and opened the gap on the plugs a little. I would like to see numbers too but this debate is getting old. Pretty soon we are going to see commercials like the PC vs. MAC ones. my point being that you are always taking a chance no matter what motor you choose. dont get me wrong the 3.0 is not among my favorites but it can be built to scream its all about the bang for the buck and if i had to I would go to a turbo deisel if I could find one that isnt a tiny 1.4 vdub but will still fit under the hood.

I dunno why you guys all complain so much about the 3.0
haha
it's a truck. plain and simple. albeit, a Toyota Pickup. Never was designed nor made to produce high speeds. I can, with my 3.0, 4.10 gears, automatic transmission, and 31 x 10.50's get my tires to spin. I can safely merge in traffic, and at least it runs a helluva lot better than the older domestics on the road.
the truck is untouchable offroad, and will take a beating at all times in all places. so what if some guy is faster off the line. Drive the truck for its purpose and you'll never be disappointed. I'm not!

Man, you naysayers are tough on Johnboy. Pragmatically, he rebuilt the engine which likely accounts for the big jump in power; restored. Granted fixing the exhaust to better flow is likely the best value for that motor. For those of you banging his pipe size choice, remember, two smaller pipes have a much larger cumulative area than one big one, so he wins the argument. A smart person can tweak the cams by using adjustable gears or simply doing the math and perhaps bumping them a tooth. I did it on a 22RE since the cam sprocket conveniently has 36 teeth. The ignition was a plus, how much, who knows but not a negative. Its his money so shut up. Removing the HP sucking stock fan is a plus and will save the motor when the OEM clutch fan decides to die. A lower restriction intake is a plus. A larger throttle body is good. Do any of you know if the MAF flows more or less than the throttle body...didn't think so. So, if Johnboy thinks his new motor hauls ass, so be it. He is happy and its his money.

It doesn't matter what you post in a forum, there will always be an objection.
Honestly, after seeing all the 3.0s that last well over 100k mi., I'd think everyone would be happy. You'd be lucky to see that in a domestic.
Some people put their pants on right leg first, some left leg first (and then there's those who don't wear pants).

240K on mine, runs fine. If you guys want a hot rod, go get a mustang, or an equally disappointing rattle box! All you need is 4LO, a hand shaker, and some nasty terrain, and have a good time!! Whats next, someone posting about how they slapped one of those fast and furious coffee-can exhaust tips on their 4x4. Build, rebuild, and repeat, then drive it till she falls apart again. Nothing wrong with polishing a TuRD, just be sure to wash your hands.
