Great write up, was very helpful.

Got a few questions, are the bolts for the hub face a special bolt or can you use ones that are the same thread count from Lowes?

Also can you use a standard o-ring as replacement or where can you get one exactly like the OEM one?

Thanks

I just rebuilt a NASTY pair i go off of eBay. Was very careful with the stupid balls but somehow managed to lose one of them. Somehow got out of the baggy!

My replacement is a ball from those lamp chains. haha haven't put that one together yet but I'll give it a try once i'm off work later. So far it works great without the grease and such.

Id imagine any bolt will do as with an o ring. Not like these are injectors or somethin. You could try your local Toyota dealer for extra parts though. Not sure on that. If not wabfab has everything you'd need, they're a little too pricey for me though!

I've got a problem! ugh

It seems my main big spring is bent outta shape and isn't keeping it properly in free mode. I'm guessing this is the problem as it looks different than the spring in the hub that's allowing it to stay free.

Question Follow up question...

Older thread I know, but...

I am about to do the same procedure, and there is one thing I can't tell from this (excellent) write-up. Can anyone tell me if the freewheel hub needs to be taken apart, or is it some sort of sealed bearing? The Toyota FSM section doesn't show any disassembly of the freewheel section and I can't tell from the pics (though they are greased in the reassembly pics). I am referring to the splined section...the pics appear to show it was cleaned as a single piece, but doesn't the splined section rotate within another section? Maybe I am missing something (I haven't torn mine down yet)?

freewhel hub as in the gear inside of the hub body? because inside the aisin unit there is no bearing... just a sliding clutch gear, the retaining spring and the Fowler clutch pawl...

if your talking about the wheen bearing, its a wheen bearing on the spindle...

as for the gear inside the hub body, it slides in grooves... when you twist the hub to lock, it forces the gear down and engages the splined end of the CV axle...

Thanks, I figured it out when I rebuilt the hubs a few weeks ago. I was referring to the back of the hub body, and the brass and steel bearing that the hub body rotates around when the axles aren't moving (i.e. in free position). Thanks for the reply!

I happened to find a ball that would work in an old carb rebuild kit I had lying around.

Very well done write up.
