Well; thought I had the rear window squared away last summer. Took the rear door apart; cleaned all the connections, cleaned and greased the moving parts. Took the console switch out; took it apart, cleaned and rebuilt it. Filled in the empty sections of the switch with epoxy so the wires and connections would not move. The window worked with both the door key and console switch.
After a summer in the pasture; I find out the stupid console switch doesn't work any more. How can it go bad by just sitting there not being used? Oh well; the door key still works.
Debating now whether it's worth it to install some other kind of switch; like a DPDT toggle switch in the console or just forget about the whole deal and just use the key. It was nice using the console switch; using it with the engine running made the window work faster.
Any ideas or opinions?

the rear window in these trucks are a mystery. Mine goes down randomly when its below zero outside but when its above zero it has never gone screwey on me. But every winter, sure enough, I go to get in my truck and its sitting there with the rear window down. Very strange.

What? You mean it goes down by itself? No that begs the question of whether or not temperature and possible condesation have an effect on the relays/switches.

There might be something here we can chase and help diagnose for others that have this issue.

Why is it that your switch no longer works is it the switch it `s self or else where.

I have had problems with the grounds going bad installed a new ground works great now.

Ghost in the machine wooooooo.Never heard of a window rolling itself down.Maybe some big guy smoking a cigar got crushed to death in the front seat while the truck was still on the assembly line.

There was someone on here a while back that got tired of messing with the rear window gremlins and turned it into a manual crank window.

camo, im guessing youve never had a 4runner. id crawl in the back to roll it down because the relay module is 350 from the parts store and troubleshooting the window is a PITA.

I hate, hate, hate the fact that the 1st and 2nd gen runners are roll down. Why can't they be pop up's?

I think that would be surprisingly easy to do. or you can direct wire the battery, I think I might go that route.

Jshaffer0525, you OBVIOUSLY can't read....i clearly own a 1992 4runner....it's in my sig dude...

i'm just saying..it would be kinda awkward to have to climb through the back everytime you wanted to roll the window down..and you wouldn't be able to use the key hole on the outside...

and who said you have to use NEW parts...hell all the rear windows in the 4runner's at the junkyard closest to me work...i know this because i tested all of them that way i know which one to go to when i need a part LOL

I agree with camo. It would be a major pain to have to crawl over my rear seats go get to my window, to roll it down with a hand crank (with my tool box in the way), so that I can unlock the door to let it down, and then climb out the back. And reversing the process?!?!?!?!?!? FORGET it. I guess i'm lazy, but I would leave it electrical. It's not that big of a pain to walk to the back of the truck to roll the window up and down. I'm the back of my truck every 5 minutes when i work on it, and when i test stuff, i drive around, or when I go in the house I toss everything in the back and roll up the window.

Have you tried simply cleaning the existing switch? The contacts in the switch can get oxidized and then it stops working.

Since the window works with the key without problem, it may not be the $350 controller located behind the left tail light.

Pull the switch from the console and clean it up with some electrical contact cleaner. That is a cheap fix to try.
