Gosh, the manual is pretty clear about how to change the shims (I assume you're not messing with the lifters). You DON'T remove the cam.

Of course, it's much more do-able with the right tool.

 

Glad you got it figured out. Too bad you did twice as much work as necessary. Oh well, now you are more familiar with your engine

 

That's how I see it.

 

All put back together, valves nice and quiet now, no smoke out of the tail pipe, and runner smooth.

Ignition timing set, got a cap and rotor coming in Thurs.

Looks like it will be time to take it to get smogged soon.
