adjusting TPS

adjusting TPS

I'm trying to follow the guide write up here: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...#TPSAdjustment

I'm getting really lost. On the TPS sensor itself, I see 2 screws. Then, on the opposite side of the throttle body, I see the adjustment screw.

The guide says, "The TPS is adjusted by means of rotating it slight with respect to the throttle body itself." Okay, so which do I adjust? The sensor itself doesn't even look like it's connected to the adjustment screw.

Also, it says the feeler gauges are for the adjustment screw (according to the #4 picture). I looked at mine...oh boy. There's a gap big enough to fit 4 dimes in there. No feeler gauge is going to ever fit in there. Is that a bad thing?

the feeler gauge is meant to 'prop' the throttle plate open in order to measure the sensor's readings at varying throttle openings.

you will ONLY adjust the TPS with its own 2 screws, on its side of the throttle body.

the 'screw' you see on the cable side of the throttle body is meant to set the initial throttle plate opening position- nothing more, nor nothing less. That is all it does.
Mucking with that screw can, and likely will cause issues later on when trying to tune the engine.

I got it. It looks like to get to those two screws I have to remove the throttle body. I have coolant lines in the way. There's no way I'll ever get a screwdriver in there.

I was able to get to mine with a right angled screwdriver.

try a ratchet wrench with a 1/4" socket and a screw gun bit if you dont have the fancy right angle drivers like Abe

I'll probably look for the right angle screwdriver. Never even knew there was such a thing. Thanks.

I have more questions regarding the TPS adjustment.

Why would a TPS suddenly become misaligned as it was in my case? One day it's fine and the other...not. Would this be more of a sign of a bad/broken TPS or could it still be misaligned?

Second question: I have all of the tools necessary for adjusting the TPS. Should I do it when the engine is warm? Can I just adjust the screws and play around with it by ear until it stops surging and will that work just as good, or are you guys insistent on using gauges?
