Adjusted my valves and I have a couple of questions.
So here's the scoop. I purchased my 93' standard cab 4wd about 3 months ago. The previous owner had a remanufactured engine put in and told me that the cam was a higher performance aftermarket (don't know what brand though!) the motor now has aprox. 20k on it.
I set the valves for the first time today, but i set them to stock spec. I noticed that the entire intake chain was set looser than stock and that the entire exhaust chain was tighter...hmmm...so perhaps the entire setup was around .010 or so, until I messed with it.
prior to the adjustment I noticed that the truck would occasionally idle rough. Now after the valve adjustment the idle has dropped to about 500rpm and is consistently rough, but maybe Lopes is a better word. Other than the annoying idle, it accelerates just fine. I noticed the power band for this truck is more in the 3-4k range or higher, but I also have larger than stock tire size. On the highway going up hill in 5th gear is not even an option, 4th works depending on the incline and 3rd gear at 4-5k works quite well. I also installed some NGK Iridium plugs today as well.
My other major concern would be the amount of oil this thing consumes. It was a quart low last night, then I drove to the beach and back today, that consisted of about 4 hours of driving, and that put me a quart low again! I don't leak oil, at least not that I can notice anyway. This truck is a beast! now I wonder if I should set the valves back to the way they were? buy maybe the stock settings will help matters

Not sure what my timing is set at. I don't have any means for checking it at the moment. mabye I should pick up a timing light and find out. What should it be set to, and does an aftermarket cam alter stock timing?
Valve chatter seems to be a bit quieter, but I will have a better idea after I drive to work tomorrow.
Any ideas on why I'm going through so much oil?
Thanks for the help!

For a 22re (if that is what you have) the guy that rebuilt my engine said to set the valves at 7 and 11 cold of 8 and 12 hot. Loosing that much oil and not finding it on the ground does not sound good. There is a link to Toyota Factory Service Manuals in my signature they may help you out.

sounds like whoever adjusted the valves set them backwards ie:12 for intake and 8 for exhaust, thats why they were loose on intake and tight on exhaust.

I have found that adjusting the valves to wear you feel the most comfortable with seems to work best. Factory specs leaves the valves chattering. I put a cam in mine and I tightened the valves till there was a little clearence and it idled rough. I loosened them a little more and it idles smooth, with a little valve chatter.
As far as your oil consumption goes if the previous owner didn't replace the head it's possible you could be loosing oil through your valve seats.

Maybe the oil consumption will improve a bit after the valve adjustment and oil change. Actually, my pcv gromet broke off and fell down into the valve cover, that's what led me to the valve adjustment in the first place. I pulled the cover off to fish that damn thing out. I would like to do a compression test as well...
