Adding Keyless Entry to 90 4-Runner
#1
Someone tried to break into my 1990 4-Runner and punched the driver's side key lock. All the doors still lock and unlock with the key in the passenger door lock and with the lock switches on the doors. I see that JC Whitney has a keyless entry for $30. http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/P...up?Ntt=keyless
Anyone ever install one of these? I think it might be easier than replacing the key lock or maybe all three keylocks (so they match). Any suggestions will be appreciated.

PS. I have power locks and they still work fine.

If your yota came with power door locks, all you have to do is figure out how they are actuated and install one of those cheap TX/RX kits. They'll work OK.
Without power locks, you're looking at installing an actuator, 2 relays per door, and running a bunch of wires.. It's not much fun and it's a real hassle to get the wires in the factory tubes that go between the door and the body.
The easiest way to do "keyless" is to buy a basic alarm system from a place like crutchfield. They offer "plug in" options on common vehicles that make installation of the alarm and associated "keyless" entry a snap.. This works for vehicles with existing power locks.

Go talk with your local car stereo shop, they'll be able to help you out. Almost every vehicle I've had the first thing I did was an alarm, and since the 4runner had power locks, I added keyless entry to it for about $40

Yep, you can install one of those jcwhitney kits easily. I have one and I have installed them on at least 4 other cars with power locks. All you have to do is remove the underdash panel from the driver's side, find the lock control module or relay box (can't remember what it is called). It is a black box on the left side, then connect the following wires:
Black and white from the keyless module are connected together to a ground -plenty of bolts to choose from under there.
Red goes to constant power which is red/white from the lock module
Green (Unlock) goes to blue/yellow from the lock module
Yellow (Lock) goes to blue/white from the lock module
Zip tie the keyless module up out of the way and you are done.
Good Luck!
