Thanks everyone in the forums for your posts, my education has been thorough, and this is about the coolest thing I've done in ages.
Your radiator is clogged in the center. A new shiny one will fix the highway overheating

Also check your fan clutch. Make sure it dosen't just free spin and there is some resistence.

Good job...

Fan clutch seems OK, nice and stiff. I'll keep an eye on it.

I'm not so sure it's the radiator. It is less than a year old, and although the whole system was clogged up with dirt and corrosion, I flushed the radiator out for a looong time. Plus, it cools fine at highway speeds, even after a long climb on the freeway. Only under load, with full A/C and stop-and-go traffic, did the temp needle begin to climb.

My guess is ignition timing, since it also hesitates just a bit at acceleration. I'll get that checked and weigh in with the results. I will also check the A/C fan for proper operation.

Thanks all!

I am coming around to the idea that the fan clutch is bad. Right after I shut it down yesterday, I could spin the fan freely. 1-2 minutes later, I could give the fan a push and it would go all the way around. Bad, right?

Still looking for the source of the rough idle. Doesn't seem to be the timing. It ran smoothly for the first 100 miles after the new HGs went on, then got rough all at once. Any ideas?
