95 runner AT problem.

I have been reading here about the coolant temp affecting the torqconvrter lockup, I just wanted to know if I could just pull out the plug from the sensor and just short it or something....maybe just jump from one terminal to the other? i really dont know anythng about electrical. thanks.

Haven't heard of anyone doing that, most people just replace the sensor if its bad.

it doesnt shift into overdrive(4th gear?). when I have time, I will try to clean the sensor but I was just wondering if ther was a way to trick the ecu into thinking the engine was hot.

I'm sure it could be done if you had the right equipment and you were the least bit skilled in electrical engineering. Of course if that was the case you'd probably realize the ECU has a temperature sensor for a reason and would want it functional.

I doubt its something as easy as jumping the 2 wires.

Temperature sensors are variable resistors. You could trick it if you know what the resistance is when warm then just buy a 1cent resistor of that size and jump it across.

The resistance values from the manual are about 2500 ohms at 68F, about 500 ohms at 140F and about 200 ohms at 212F. If you can get a 200 ohms resistor and put it in the circuit in place of the sensor the computer will think the engine is hot. Of course this might cause other problems. You may be better with a variable resistor that can be adjusted as the engine warms up.

200 ohms, eh, I think I'm going to defeat that sensor. I hate cruising down the freeway at 4k+ RPM waiting for it to warm up.

my tc wont lockup some times.... its great in the winter, as the power band for the 2gen is finnaly right. but in the summer it will peg my trans temp in no time

ive been wanting to wire in a bypass so i could switch it on and off like the overdrive. There are times when i need that extra 500rpm and other times when i just want the MF'r to stay locked.

i might be reading into this but, are you asking why your trans doesnt shift into o/d for the first 5 mins or so of driving in cold weather? if that is what you are asking, it is because your trans fluid hasnt reached optimal operating temperature and until it does, youre 'stuck' in 3rd gear. that is a common problem with the auto trans in cold weather.

if this is NOT what you are asking, then disregard.

T-stat is your problem.

I had exactly same problem. it was driving me crazy. How long ago you changed your thermostat? That was my problem.

changed the sensor or at least what I thought ws the sensor(farthest most driver side) and nothing. no tstat but ran te engine hot about half on the gauge and still slipping on 1st,2nd,and 3rd and not shifting to 4th....
If im accelerating the engine will shift from 3000 to 2800 then shift the same rpm for the next gear and no OD. So Im cruising in 3rd at 40mph at 3000rpm. anyways, thanks for your replies.
